by TE Debbie Schmidt,
Associate for
Spiritual Leader Development
The first two years my husband and I served as mission coworkers in Japan we lived and worked at a girl's school in a small farming community. That school had been
the first school in that area to offer an education to girls and it was founded by Presbyterian missionaries. Presbyterians have historica
lly valued education and have focused particularly on providing schooling opportunities for those who might not otherwise have access to a good education.
In that long tradition, the Presbytery of Baltimore offers several scholarships and loans for young people in our churches who would like to pursue a degree at a college or seminary. The following scholarships are available:
This
$5,000 Student Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to deserving high school students who wish to further their education at an accredited college or university. Priority shall be given to financially deserving students whose family income is modest. The amount of the scholarship shall be $5,000 for one year. Recipients may reapply for subsequent years.
Deadline May 15, 2016.
This fund provides
interest free loans to full-time college juniors, seniors and graduate school candidates for the 2016/2017 academic year. The fund is available through Springfield Presbyterian Church. All applicants will be given impartial consideration regardless of religion.
Deadline March 1, 2016.
Applicants must be under the care or registered as an Inquirer with the committees on Preparation on Ministry of the Presbytery of Baltimore, Newcastle Presbytery, or National Capital Presbytery to receive consideration.
Bridges Fund is open to any matriculated theological student or intended theological student at the following academic institutions only: Union Seminary (Richmond), Princeton Theological Seminary, McCormick Theological Seminary, Louisville Theological Seminary, Columbia Theological Seminary, as well as Davidson and Hampden Sydney colleges.
Deadline April 25, 2016.
You can find more information about these scholarships along with applications on the Presbytery website under Spiritual Leader Development. Just click on the sidebar labeled scholarships or, for a shortcut, click
