This week in the gospel reading from Mark, we find James and John wanting to go where Jesus goes and also sit one on his right, and one on his left. You can almost hear the other ten disciples' frustration and disgust. Previously in Mark, Jesus has spent a lot of time talking to them about the first must be last and the last will be first. He has used children in many of his demonstrations and called them to be child-like.
James and John are exemplifying childish behavior, by competing to be closest to Jesus. There is a distinct difference between childish behavior and child-like behavior. Childish behavior reminds me of the seagulls from Finding Nemo that fly around saying, "Mine, Mine, Mine, Mine."
Child-like behavior is steeped in abundance and full of imagination. It's graceful and doesn't know the bounds of this world. It's playful and includes everyone who is willing to play. Sounds a lot like heaven to me.
My prayer is that you find time to be child-like in this most beautiful time of year in Texas.

St. Teresa of Avila
Today is the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Avila, also called St. Teresa of Jesus. She lived from 1515-1582 and was born in Avila, Spain. Her parents were devout Catholics.
She was sent to a convent for her education as a teenager, after her mother died, and she began having mystical experiences and visions, which continued throughout her life. She was inspired to pursue a life of prayer.
After becoming a Carmelite nun, she reformed the order, which she felt had become too worldlyand lax. Then she went about Spain, setting up cloisters and monasteries. Teresa wrote many works about mysticism and practiced what she called "mental prayer" and contemplation. Her writings include "The Interior Castle," her autobiography and poetry. She is today considered to be one of the great Christian Mystics.

All things pass;
God does not change.
Patience wins
all it seeks.
Whoever has God
lacks nothing:
God alone is enough.

Church Women United
World Community Day - Our Journey Together
Please join The Episcopal Church Women and the Church Women United on Friday, November 6,2015 for a morning of service for World Community Day -- Our Journey Together.
Fellowship and registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Narthex, followed by the prayer service beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the church.
ECW is the host for Church Women United and will be providing refreshments for this event. Please consider providing pastries, fruits, etc. The ECW will arrive at 8:00 a.m. to set up for this service and provide any assistance to Church Women United as needed. If you are willing to donate your time and resources, your assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Do Something Where You Count...
. . . and sing! (Yes, the pun is intended.) The ECR Choir is starting Advent and Christmas music next week, and here's your chance to get your weekly holiday fix without involving shopping! We practice Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 in the choir room. Come add your voice to the fun! All voice parts are very welcome, and we'd particularly like to find a few more basses to keep Andy Lyon company. Helen Paulsen has announced that the St. Clare Chapter of the Daughters of the King will meet on Oct. 18th at Noon in Classroom 4.
Anyone who is interested in the Daughters of the King can contact Helen, and she will be happy to give any information that would be helpful regarding the group's mission and goals.

Wednesday Bible Study Continues
Wednesday morning Bible Study continues from 8:30 am to 9:30 am at Genuine Joe's Coffee House at 2001 W. Anderson Lane. The Bible students have studied a lot of the scripture so far, and will continue on. They are finished with the Apocraphyal book of Tobit, and will commence their study of the Maccabees.

Dine Out News
That Threadgills' Armadillo is hopping again to let you know that Dine Out will be there on Saturday, Oct. 17th at 6 p.m. The address is 6416 N. Lamar
Mr. Joe Page has invited everyone, as usual, and there will not only be plenty of that good Texas downhome Threadgill's food, but good fellowship, as well. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex, and Mr. Page can answer any questions you might have with just a call to him at 512-453-3077.

Drive A Senior Having
Oktoberfest Oct. 15th
Our friends at Drive A Senior are having their Fall Fundraiser on Oct. 15th from 4 p.m. to 7p.m. at Delaney's Ice House, 7849 Shoal Creek Blvd. and everyone is cordially invited to enjoy Octoberfest with them. Advance tickets are $20, and will be $25 at the door. They are also offering raffle tickets at $5 and $10 for some great prizes. |

Brotherhood of St. Andrew
To Meet
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew will have their monthly meeting this coming Saturday, October 17, at 8:30 AM in the Parish Hall. Meetings of the Brotherhood include a pleasant balance of piety and social friendliness. A light breakfast will be served, and there will be a program which will center on a video presentation of two verses from the bible, each presentation being a dramatized enactment of the verse. All men and boys are welcome to attend
