News & Updates
I'm happy to announce that last week, because of the contributions from every faculty department in the school, the LRC was able to donate 1,500+ books to Books4Cause in Skokie, IL. This organization gathers lightly-used books to create and develop libraries and education programs in rural regions of Africa.

If you'd like to donate any of your books to this organization, Books4Cause will come to your house, box your books, and ship them for you. Or, you can drop them off yourselves at their warehouse in Skokie. Visit their website here.

This Printz Honor Book is a "tender, honest exploration of identity" (Publishers Weekly) that distills lyrical truths about family and friendship.

The Martian (2011) by  Andy Weir

Call Number:  FIC Weir

New York Times Notable Book
Time Magazine "Best Comix of the Year"
San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times Best-seller

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars' surface, completely alone, with no way to signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone years before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark's not ready to quit. Armed with nothing but his ingenuity and his engineering skills - and a gallows sense of humor that proves to be his greatest source of strength - he embarks on a dogged quest to stay alive, using his botany expertise to grow food and even hatching a mad plan to contact NASA back on Earth.

As he overcomes one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next, Mark begins to let himself believe he might make it off the planet alive - but Mars has plenty of surprises in store for him yet.

Grounded in real, present-day science from the first page to the last, yet propelled by a brilliantly ingenious plot that surprises the reader again and again, The Martian is a truly remarkable thriller: an impossible-to-put-down suspense novel that manages to read like a real-life survival tale.

Evernote Web Clipper

You've probably heard of Evernote--the app to manage, well, your entire life. It allows you to write notes, archive, and organize all of your information. I've never been able to work it into my life, to be honest.

The Evernote Web Clipper is, however, worth your attention. Billing itself as "the save button for the web," Evernote Web Clipper allows you to bookmark websites to your online Evernote account and file those websites into folders or "notebooks" of your choosing. This means you can access your bookmarks from any device--computer, smart phone, or tablet. Also, the bookmarks are not restricted to websites, you can clip articles and screenshots. This has brought so much organization to my web life. The web clipper is most useful as an extension on your browser.

I've used Web Clipper for creating study guides, sharing lists of resources with students, and preserving articles I want to read later. To see how it works, watch the video below:
