 Five Aircraft Owners to Receive $1,000 Toward an ADS-B Upgrade at AirVenture in Oshkosh
To help incentivize owners of general aviation aircraft to meet the Federal Aviation Administration's ADS-B Out mandate, the Aircraft Electronics Association will randomly award five aircraft owners with $1,000 toward an ADS-B compliant upgrade during EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Each of the five winners must use an AEA-member avionics shop to complete the installation, and the installation must be scheduled by Aug. 1, 2015.
Aircraft owners may enter to win one of the five $1,000 giveaways at the AEA's booth (No. 2035/36 in hangar B). One entry gives aircraft owners a chance to win each of the five daily drawings. The AEA will announce one winner each day from July 29 through Aug. 2 through its social media outlets on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and from its booth in Oshkosh.
"The FAA recently made it clear to Congress that the Jan. 1, 2020, deadline for ADS-B Out compliance is not going to change," said Paula Derks, AEA president. "The avionics repair shops have less than six years to equip approximately 186,000 operational aircraft, which means the industry must upgrade more than 130 aircraft per workday between now and the deadline. Currently, the industry is barely upgrading 100 aircraft a month, or around five per workday. Obviously, there's a lot of catching up to do.
"While the avionics repair shops have the capacity to meet demand at the present time, this will not be the case beyond 2016 unless the installation pace picks up dramatically. Aircraft owners who wait to equip will face scheduling pressure and higher installation costs as we get closer to the deadline. By awarding $1,000 to five different aircraft owners to help them become compliant sooner rather than later, the AEA hopes to send a message to owners of general aviation aircraft that the time to act and upgrade is now."  NextGen: What you Need to Know
A new one-stop resource on NextGen is now available online. Topics such as ADS-B, datalink, navigation and available financing options are covered along with some answers to frequently asked questions. The FAA, in collaboration with industry, is deploying NextGen procedures and technology on the ground, in the air, at air traffic control facilities and in the cockpit. First set of NPAs Issued since CARAC Resumed Activities in October 2013

Professional development opportunities
Four Training Classes Available at AEA Headquarters in August
The Aircraft Electronics Association is offering four educational courses during the month of August in the Dan Derby Center for Professional Development at its international headquarters in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
- Avionics Installation and Integration Training: Aug. 18-20
- Pitot-Static and Transponder Certification Training: Aug. 21
- RVSM Maintenance & Advanced Transponder Training: Aug. 22
- NCATT AET Review: Aug. 25-27
 First, the Avionics Installation and Integration Training course is slated for Aug. 18-20. Presented by Don Dominguez of Radioman Avionics, this three-day course is designed for technicians who have completed AEA's Basic Wiring and Avionics Installation Course and/or have a couple years of basic avionics installation practice and are looking for more experience integrating common general aviation installations. Technicians will learn how to plan, install, interface, configure and check out an installation consisting of a Garmin GTN 650 touchscreen nav/comm/GPS, Garmin GTX33ES remote transponder and an Aspen EFD1000 primary flight display.
In addition, the Pitot-Static and Transponder Certification Training course takes place Aug. 21. Attendees will learn the proper methods for conducting pitot-static and transponder certification testing. This full-day course offers hands-on training, including a regulatory review and an explanation of the proper administrative procedures for completing these critical certifications. It also includes a transponder tune-up course. The contents of this course can easily be incorporated into approved training programs for certified repair stations.
The RVSM Maintenance and Advanced Transponder Training course immediately follows on Aug. 22. Attendees will be introduced to the regulations, documentation, test equipment and maintenance practices associated with performing RVSM maintenance and will follow with an in-depth look at Mode S transponders. This course assumes the attendee has good operating knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations 91.411 and 91.413.
Finally, the National Center for Aerospace and Transportation Technologies Aircraft Electronics Technician Review course takes place Aug. 25-27. Presented by Bruce Bessette, who has more than 30 years of avionics and maintenance experience, this three-day course provides a review of all 34 subject areas for the NCATT AET certification exam. At the end of this review, course attendees should be prepared to take the NCATT AET certification test, which will be administered free of charge (a $100 value). Upon successful completion of the AET exam, attendees will be eligible to test for additional ratings, including the NCATT Radio Communications Systems (RCS), Dependent Navigation Systems (DNS) and Autonomous Navigation Systems (ANS) endorsements.

 2014 New Avionics Products Introduced: Aircell
Earlier this year, 23 companies introduced new avionics products and services for general aviation. Aircell announced its new ST 4300 in-flight communications solution for business aircraft at the 2014 AEA International Convention & Trade Show in Nashville, Tennessee. The company also announced the launch of its Gogo Biz in-flight Internet and voice service in Canada as of April 1. ASPEN AVIONICS and Aspen STC Inc. announced that several Enstrom helicopters are now approved for retrofit with Aspen Avionics' Evolution EFD 1000H Pro primary flight display and EFD 500H/1000H multifunction display through a supplemental type certificate issued to Aspen STC Inc.
PS ENGINEERING  announced IntelliAudio true dimensional sound to help private pilots cope with audio overload. With technology from scientists at the Wright Patterson Air Force Laboratory, the PMA450 combines digital signal processing and a simple user interface to provide flexibility. DUMONT AVIATION added a Falcon 50 to its fleet. The aircraft will be based in New Castle, Delaware, and will operate under Lyon Aviation's charter certificate.  KINGS AVIONICS completed and obtained certification on the first retrofit, slant-panel installation of the Garmin GTN 750 navigator into an MD520N model helicopter. SATCOM DIRECT expanded its Savannah, Georgia, office to include dedicated classrooms and an updated lab for FlightSafety International training. L-3 AVIATION PRODUCTS announced that Embraer selected the FA5003 Cockpit Voice and Data Recorder system as its standard forward-fit solution for the E-Jets E2 commercial aircraft program. In addition, ACSS, a division of L-3 Aviation Products, was ranked fifth by Airbus in its annual ranking of major suppliers and was named the "Most Improved" supplier of the year for 2013. AVIONICS & SYSTEMS INTEGRATION GROUP was awarded a Canadian supplemental type certificate by Transport Canada for the installation of the Class 2 flyTab EFB based upon the Apple iPad platform on the Bombardier CL-600 Series models. JEPPESEN said the company now offers operators an enhanced version of its FliteDeck Pro electronic flight bag solution for iPad. GARMIN announced new features for the GTN touchscreen avionics. New capabilities include Connext cockpit connectivity, which supports wireless flight plan transfer between the GTN 750/650 series navigators and Garmin Pilot. ADVANCED HELICOPTER SERVICES announced a service agreement to provide helicopter maintenance services for the city of Sacramento, California. PRECISION AVIATION SERVICES was selected by MD Helicopters to be an authorized MD Helicopters service center. In addition, DAVID A. FORD was named president. ROCKWELL COLLINS broke ground for a new research and development facility in Reading, United Kingdom. In addition, the Venue cabin management and high-definition entertainment system was selected by Sabena Technics for installation aboard a Boeing Business Jet. COBHAM SATCOM's AVIATOR 300 SwiftBroadband solution received a supplemental type certificate for its installation aboard a range of Airbus aircraft. BEECHCRAFT CORP., a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., launched a new demonstrator dedicated to showcasing the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities of its Baron G58 piston-engine aircraft. GLOBALPARTS GROUP INC. of Augusta, Kansas, acquired the assets of Tulakes Aero Inc. of Bethany, Oklahoma, and incorporated them into a new division named Global Parts Aero Structures Inc.
