steeplesSave Our Steeples! St. Josaphat Steeple Being Restored

Severe weather in late November 2013 damaged the iconic, 215-foot-tall main steeple of St. Josaphat Catholic Church, a 112-year-old church in downtown Detroit, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Set against the backdrop of the Renaissance Center, the beauty of this grand old steeple is a familiar sight to drivers traveling I-75 into downtown Detroit.

Initially thought to be damaged beyond repair, the steeple is now very stable, from a temporary perspective, and is deemed savable. The parish now wrestles with the decision between removal and capping against restoring the iconic structure and the funds required for either.

Undaunted, the struggling parish and the community is now rallying to build a new steeple and restore it to its rightful place in the parish and in Detroit's tapestry of buildings.

For more information and/or to donate, please visit the Mother of Divine Mercy Parish's website at motherofdivinemercy.com. Donation checks may be made payable to:

CAM members are already hard at work in their efforts to save this iconic structure. Thank you for your support and your concern for saving our historic landmarks and architecture in Detroit.

missdigMichigan Passes MISS DIG Underground Facility Damage Prevention & Safety Act

CAM Member Robert J. Gullo, Attorney & Counselor at Law, recently wrote an article concerning the much-anticipated MISS DIG Underground Facility Damage Prevention & Safety Act (2013 PA 174, MCL 460.721, et seq.). The Act was finally passed into law earlier in December 2013. It takes effect on April 1, 2014 and as of that date, it will replace the Protection of Underground Facilities Act ("PUFA") (MCL 460.701, et seq.), which is being repealed.

The new Act is much more comprehensive than its predecessor (PUFA) and while some aspects of the old law are being continued, a number of new provisions have been added.  A few of those new provisions are worth highlighting.
