A  message from his wife,  Celeste Schepp D'Amanda  '09
Louis died peacefully on Wednesday, December 9th, surrounded by love. Our family is grateful for all the many ways each of you have supported us all throughout the last 3-1/2 years. A celebration of his life will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, December 21st at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue, Rochester, NY, 14607.

For more information, please read Louis' obituary.

Richard Blumenthal, Art Lowenthal '37, and Bud Ewell '40

We were recently notified about the passing of Art Lowenthal '37. Art started at Harley back in the 1920's when Harley was located on Oxford Street. He was the nephew of one of the founders of the School and is the uncle of Jim '74, Juliet '71, and John Alsina '68. Art was an avid supporter of The Harley School for more than four decades, always supporting the campaigns, The Harley Fund, and, most recently, a fund in memory of his good friend Maggie Schneider. The Upper School Computer Lab was dedicated to his parents, Helene and Arthur M. Lowenthal.

I spoke to a long-time friend of his today, Esther Goldberg, and she said, "Art was a giving and caring person. He was dedicated to Harley and to RIT. Anyplace that needed help, he gave it to them. Always."

There will be a memorial service for Art next summer.

The Selous in Africa: A Long Way from Anywhere by Robert Ross '74

"The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is one of the last remaining great wilderness areas in Africa. Added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1982, the Selous is Africa's oldest and largest protected area and remains one of the continent's greatest undisturbed ecosystems. Teeming with life--including one of the largest elephant populations remaining on the African continent, more lions than any other protected area on the continent, large packs of wild dogs, and vast herds of buffalo--the Selous is a crown jewel of biodiversity and wilderness preservation."

Rob's new book "features nearly 400 photographs of this extraordinary place. Not only the large mega-fauna typically seen in a photographic book on African wildlife, but also the fantastic and often overlooked smaller creatures, birds, insects, and dramatic landscapes are captured in these breathtaking images."

Robert Ross '74
Robert is a professional photographer and his work has been featured in National Geographic Adventure, National Geographic Traveler, Conde Nast Traveler, and many other travel and environmental journals.  His book was released in November and is available on Amazon .

Paul Snyder '65, once photography editor of the '65 COMET, has written a financial history of interest to anyone who ever resided in the Rochester area. His account of the financial destruction of Rochester's most famous company Is This Something George Eastman Would Have Done? - The Decline and Fall of Eastman Kodak Company is available on Amazon. According to the cover, Eastman's meticulous research details the miscalculations and wrong decisions that ultimately led to Kodak's 2012 bankruptcy.

Upcoming February Commons Speaker Series:
Robert Staehle '73, engineer and researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is coming to Harley to speak about aerospace at our next  Commons Speaker Series on February 23, 2016 at 6:30 pm . Rob, and his wife, Lori Paul, are spending much of the week at Harley and plan to come to school to work with students of all ages, teaching them about space and being a scientist or engineer.

Rob's career in science started at Harley when he asked his physics teacher, Al Soanes, for a six week independent study. He wrote a proposal for the National Science Teachers Association and NASA sponsored competition, "Skylab Student Project." Picked as one of the 25 national winners, his experiment was conducted aboard Skylab, the first U.S. space station. Fast forward to NASA's historic mission to Pluto this past July. Rob and his team at JPL were behind it! Rob will discuss his exciting career and the Pluto mission at February's Speaker Series.

Hillary Levitt '04 recently stopped by Harley to catch up and visit some teachers. Hillary is currently an assistant district attorney for Monroe County.

From Jim Moore '80, English and Micro Economics Instructor at Blair Academy: This photo is of me in my AP Micro Economics class. To my left, in the white shirt, is Haley Gelberg, who attended Harley's Lower School with my kids Harry and Emma. (Haley, who, had she stayed in Rochester, would have been Harley '16.) Thought you might be interested in seeing two Harley veterans in the same classroom 275 miles from Rochester!
