On Wednesday, Feb. 17, jazz bands from all four Hillsboro high schools gathered at the Venetian Theatre in downtown Hillsboro for the eighth annual Jazz Night- a non-competitive evening of celebrating our truest American art form, jazz music! The musicians wowed the packed house with their spirited and professional play.
Glencoe Hosts RoboExpo on March 4
UPCOMING EVENTS FEBRUARY
Glencoe's annual RoboExpo and spaghetti dinner will be held on Thursday, March 3, in the school's cafeteria from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Team Shockwave will publicly unveil their latest robot for the FIRST Robotics Stronghold competition, and other robotics teams from Hillsboro will demonstrate their robots' capabilities. The star of the show will be Artosaur, a 6-foot tall robotic dinosaur Team Shockwave made in partnership with artist Christine Martel of Creative Hillsboro. Other community supporters such as Intel and the Washington County Sheriff's Department will also demonstrate their latest robots.
In last week's "Hot News," we talked about the District's switch to a physics-first science sequence in high school as one component of the transition to the Next Generation Science Standards, with implementation starting at Glencoe and Liberty next fall. Reminder: Educator Job Fair is Feb. 27
The District is holding an Educator Job Fair on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at South Meadows Middle School, 4690 SE Davis Road. Century's Student Health Advisory Committee Educates About Self-Harm
Century High School's Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) recently held a symposium to educate fellow students about self-harm and suicide. The symposium was one of the major events of their Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) project. Last year, the SHAC's YPAR project was on sleep.
Hillsboro Tribune Amazing Kids Award 2016
The Hillsboro Tribune is honoring one student from the Hillsboro area with the 2016 Amazing Kid Award. The winner and runners-up will be featured in a special section of the newspaper, and the winner will be honored at a special event in May 2016. Nomination deadline is Feb. 29. Problem Gambling Awareness Art Contest for Middle Schoolers
Washington County Health and Human Services is sponsoring an art contest for middle schoolers, in which students are asked to create a gambling prevention poster that includes both an illustration and written message. Winning art will be included in a special 2017 calendar to be distributed throughout the state. Gift certificates will be awarded. Click here for more information.
