So, you're thinking of remodeling your kitchen. It's not functional, it's closed in, it's entirely not right. Where to start?

That's were the Sweeney Construction can help.  We can take your dreams and goals and turn them into a reality. Not only do we have an expert design team that can design your dream space, but we remodel the space with extensive craftsmanship and care.

That's where we started with Karla and Charles. When asked why she wanted a kitchen remodel, Karla said, "There were so many reasons! The floor plan of the house was oddly compartmentalized and the kitchen was really small at only 120 sq/ft. We rarely used the living room and really only used the dining room table for holidays. Also, the electrical needed to be updated, along with insulation and a window. Overall, the space was tired and needed a new energy!"

That's where The Sweeney Construction Team stepped in.

Step 1: Turning Their Dream into a Design
Their main goals were to make the space more conducive to the way they lived. Karla said,"I enjoy cooking, it relaxes me to putter around the kitchen; on the other hand, my husband, Charles, like to unwind and watch the news when he gets home from work. We needed a space where we could both relax after work and still hang out together."

Once the construction and structural documents were completed, Karla and Charles finalized their products and selection.  Then, the Sweeney Team, which consisted of our project manager and our subcontractors/venders met on site along with Karla and Charles to discuss the final details of the actual project.  This collaborative meeting is very critical to address and find solutions for possible issues that may come up during construction.  Taking the time to do our due diligence prevents change orders and delays in the overall project.  This process allows us to deliver a quality project on time and on budget!

One of the challenging aspects of this project was to install a structural/aesthetic beam to achieve the open floor plan which was Karla and Charles' main goal.
Step 2: Finishes and Products, Paying Close Attention to Detail
Karla sums it up perfectly... "When you first walk in, you see the fireplace. We had an antique icebox repurposed into our fireplace mantel and wood box by Paul Morrison at the Wood Cycle. With that unique piece surrounded by stacked stone, the fireplace is beyond what we had imagined. It's incredibly beautiful. With our newly vaulted ceiling, the fireplace is now a showcase instead of the 1950's painted brick façade we used to have.

The kitchen is incredible. We have all under the counter Sub-Zero cold storage that has the same panels as our cabinets; there are two refrigerator drawers, one small refrigerator and two freezer drawers, one drawer is the icemaker. We also have our dishwasher paneled, two drawers instead of a traditional dishwasher. It works well for just the two of us. The natural gas Jenn-Air range was the perfect choice because it has a down vent which eliminated the need for an overhead vent hood for the stovetop.

We chose a modest cabinet in a chestnut color that we felt would blend well. They are beautiful and so functional. The gentle closing doors and drawers are so nice. For the counter tops, we wanted quartz because it has so many different looks available, and it is non-porous. We used solid gray Cambria quartz under the cabinets and to surround the sink, by the stove we used a butcher block that was made by Brunsell Lumber with built in canisters for utensils and a knife block making it a beautiful and functional working surface. The big snack bar counter top is a very vibrant quartz called Aberdeen, again by Cambria. Of course I wanted a little sparkle in the kitchen so we have cubed stainless steel back splash. It works well with the mixture of materials we used. It's gorgeous!"

Step 3: Making Their Dream a Reality
Once the contract was signed, which detailed their specific selections and products, subcontractor proposals, materials and labor, we began demolition phase.

Step 4: Progress is Taking Shape!

There are always a few hurdles. Karla writes, "Fortunately we had a top-notch team working for us on the construction, so we always came home to a clean house and informed of any schedule changes right away. The communication from our  lead carpenter, Rich, was great. We had some delays that were out of anyone's control but nothing troublesome."

Step 5: It's Over!

When we asked Karla about her favorite part of the space, she said, " We use all of the space on a daily basis now. There is not any wasted space. Also, we recently had a post-construction party and invited all of our neighbors. It was so much fun with about 25 people at the house! Although people still hovered around the kitchen, there was plenty of space for everyone! We still walk into our house and are amazed that it truly is our house!"
Karla and Charles were such a delight to work with! Not only did we help create their vision, we worked together with our subcontractors, engineers, designers, construction crew and homeowners to create a space that makes sense. Now, all of their family and friends can enjoy time together.
