Here's another excellent example of community advocacy -- everyone should be VERY proud of this work--these folks have been "chipping away at it" for as long as I can remember - hearty congratulations to the City of Markham and all the advocates involved:
This is a good news story we'd like to share. Over many years, t
he City of Markham's Animal Care Committee has
worked and advocated for improved adoption rates. The City of Markham recently opened a Cat Adoption and Education Centre inside the Thornhill Community Centre (official opening Feb 23). This is an innovative way to promote adoption and responsible pet guardianship and engage the public.
There is a tremendous amount of traffic and in less than 2 weeks, over 22 cats have been adopted! Education programs and community involvement will be developed (there's a library and seniors centre attached).
This could not happened without the support and vision of Markham staff and City council.

Folks, I posted the wrong picture last week -- here is the real Blackie...
Dear Blackie is an older (9ish) girl with lots of life in her. She was given away by the family that she grew up with all her life -- but does not let that get her down. She has been in foster since last summer. She is a happy girl who gets along with other dogs and cats. She is very friendly and gentle with people. Blackie grew up in a family with children, so she is very used to having kids around, although she is not a young dog to romp and play with kids, she is happy to have them around. Blackie is very house mannerly and does not get into any mischief when left alone. She is quiet and does not bark. The only times I have even heard her bark is about 3 times when on our walks she joined in barking with my dog who barked at another dog. I don't even think she new why she was barking, she just seemed to like to join in with my dog LOL!!! Blackie is a bit overweight, she is reducing and needs to have at least 2 walks a day, she greatly enjoys the off leash park and swimming in the river. Blackie is the best dog I have ever fostered, she is a great companion and would do very well in a quiet low energy home with retired folks or work from home folks. Blackie loves to be with her person/people but is ok when left alone. She has a bit of trouble doing stairs, so a home without too many stairs would be great. Astro, 7 years young, needs a new home!
Astro is a loyal dog, eager to please and loves being with his people. He walks well on leash and is very obedient, both on and off leash. He's quiet, not a barker, and is great inside the home and when left home alone. Unfortunately, the dynamics of his home have changed, and he needs to be rehomed to a guardian(s) without young children, as he's not comfortable around them. Living peacefully with another dog would likely be a challenge, though he has formed social relationships with non-dominant female dogs over the years. So, to give Astro the best opportunity to succeed in his new home, we're looking for an experienced dog owner and an adults-only home, preferably no other pets, and definitely no children under 10 years of age. Astro would be happy in a house or an apartment. He's very relaxed indoors and active outside. He is a 7 years young Lab/Australian Shepherd mix weighing about 50lbs.
