June 14 is World Blood Donor Day
The American Red Cross seeks eligible donors to give blood in honor of World Blood Donor Day, June 14, and throughout the summer to help ensure a sufficient blood supply for patients in need.

Summer is an especially difficult time to collect enough blood to meet the needs of hospital patients. Many schools that host blood drives are out of session during the summer, and regular donors are often vacationing, potentially making them less available to give.  World Blood Donor Day highlights the constant need for donors - during the summer and throughout the year.  Those who come to donate blood with the Red Cross June 8-14, 2015, will receive a limited edition Nexcare give bandage in one of eight global-inspired designs in honor of World Blood Donor Day.  Every day this summer is a chance to give hope. Eligible donors are encouraged to choose their day to make a difference. Donors of all blood types - especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative - are needed.

American Red Cross Blood Donation Center:

Contra Costa Blood Donation Center: 140 Gregory Ln., Pleasant Hill

  • Tuesday and Wednesday 11:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Additional blood donation location and opportunities are available: click here or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or to find another location or for general information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Emergency Medical Services Week
At the May 12 Board of Supervisors meeting, the Supervisors recognized the week of May 17 - 23, 2015 as National Emergency Medical Services Week, for the Children with the theme of "EMS Strong."  May 17th through the 23rd was National EMS Week and May 20th was EMS for Children Day; recognizing ALL emergency medical service (EMS) professionals.

EMS is an integrated system  of private and public partners including: 9-1-1 dispatch - police - fire - air and ground ambulance personnel - hospital staff - and  specialty receiving centers for Trauma, Stroke and STEMI (high risk heart attack).

The Contra Costa County EMS Agency deeply appreciates the commitment of our EMS professionals to patient advocacy and their dedication to service excellence. Thank you for keeping Contra Costa County...EMS Strong. For more information about National Emergency Medical Services Week, click hereTo learn more about the Contra Costa EMS for Children Program, click here.

Summer is around the corner, and with it brings fun activities in our area of the County to enjoy with friends and family - the Summer Concerts hosted by so many of our communities every year.  Each has put together a wide range of musical talents for everyone to enjoy.

The concerts are held on different nights of the week, and the music reflects many different genres.  The park settings and a picnic dinner are perfect compliments to an evening of music outdoors.  It's a great opportunity to showcase your own community or visit a new one!  It's also a nice way to support local businesses by purchasing your meal "to go" from one of our exceptional restaurants.

fostercare
Foster Care Services Honored in Contra Costa

In Contra Costa County we have approximately 1100 children currently in foster care.  Children who are separated from their family are often placed in foster homes.  There is a great need for Foster Parents who are willing to provide emergency, temporary or long-term care to our youth. It is best for children to be able to stay in their own communities, remain in their same schools, continue to play on their same sports teams, stay connected to their same faith based organizations, and their same doctors. Sadly, there is a critical need for homes for youth of all ages, 0-18.  Children are waiting to be loved, helped and cared for by families in our community.  Please consider becoming a Foster Parent in Contra Costa County.

There are some very basic requirements to become a foster parent:

  • You must be over 18 years old
  • You must reside in Contra Costa County
  • You may be married or single
  • You can work outside of your home
  • You can live in an apartment or house
  • You must have adequate space and meet the State health and safety standards
  • You must have sufficient income to meet your own family's financial needs
  • You must have a desire to help and care for a child in our County

When someone chooses to be a foster parent they become a very important member of a team of professionals who are dedicated to the welfare of children in their care. Each child placed will have a social worker. Social workers play a key role in the foster child's life and are readily available to assist foster parents in their efforts. In addition to coordinating birth parent visits, court appearances, and therapeutic services, social workers are oftentimes a foster family's link to a variety of resources. Additionally, there are groups such as the Foster Family Network (FFN). The FFN is a chapter of the California State Foster Parent Association, Inc., with the goals to inform, educate and support the foster family community in Contra Costa County.

Before a child can be placed in a home, potential foster parents must obtain a license to provide care to foster children. The first step in obtaining a license is to attend a brief orientation held by Contra Costa County Children and Family Services. At the orientation, individuals can obtain an application to become licensed along with other information regarding the process of becoming a foster parent. This orientation provides a chance for individuals to meet and interact with others who may be interested in becoming a foster or an adoptive parent.

The journey starts by attending a 2-Hour Mandatory Informational Orientation to become a Licensed Foster Parent.  There is an Orientation scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on July 22, at the Pittsburg Senior Center, 300 Presidio Lane, Pittsburg. For future Orientation dates/locations, to inquire about a sooner date or more convenient location, or for more information, please call Monica Cummings (925) 602-6930 or Toll Free 1-866-313-7788. The next step will be to attend 21 hours of training. This training is designed to enhance the ability of the foster family to meet the complex needs of a foster child.

Lastly, financial assistance is also available for the children of the individuals who become foster parents. Foster Care benefits provide cash aid on behalf of needy children in foster care who meet the eligibility requirements established by County, State and Federal law and regulation.

I have personally seen the difference foster parents make in the lives of children who, through no fault of their own, are separated from their parents and families. This potentially traumatic situation is eased by the great support and comfort received from a caring foster family.  A foster family has the ability to lay the foundation for success in a child's life. For more information about becoming a Foster Parent in Contra Costa County, click here.
