Dear Reader,

Mark your calendar for two happenings this Saturday!

First, from 1 to 3 come to a reception for our March artists. They are all people who taught or were campers at the annual Feather River Art Camp for adults. We wanted to show off what a great program this is so if you're even a little tempted, please join us to ask questions and see what's possible.

Then at 4 please be here to meet Medieval Noir author of the Crispin series, Jeri Westerson. She has a great grasp of history, weaponry, and a good mystery so we're excited to have her here from southern California!

The weather is turning wet, so make sure you have a book ready for when you get to stay in and rest up. Plus it's nearly tax time- don't give in to that manic I-don't-have-time-to-read thing between now and April 15th! No! You need something handy for when you actually get a few minutes to decompress and escape.
     We're here for you.

Happy Reading,

Luan

New and Notable

A Gutsy Girl; Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure by Caroline Paul with illustrations by Wendy MacNaughton $18
Why should girls miss out on the joy of adventure? They can jump off rocks, swing on ropes, and climb trees just as well as boys can. But girls often allow fear to stand in their way. In The Gutsy Girl, author Caroline Paul emboldens girls to seek out a life of exhilaration. Once a young scaredy-cat herself, Caroline decided that fear got in the way of the life she wanted--of excitement, confidence, self-reliance, friendship, and fun. She has since flown planes, rafted big rivers, climbed tall mountains, and fought fires as one of the first female firefighters in San Francisco. She shares her greatest escapades as well as those of other girls and women from throughout history, and offers engaging activities such as confidence-building stances, creating a compass, positive self-talk, and using crickets to estimate outside temperatures. Each section includes a place for girls to "journal" their adventures, thus encouraging a new generation to develop a zest for challenges and a healthy relationship to risk.
Do you have a Gutsy Girl in your life who could use some encouragement? This book is a wonderful mix of stories and things to do. Perfect gift for a 10 year old or 30 year old.

Just in time for Women's History Month comes the release of The Compete Wimmen's Comix compiled by Trina Robbins $100
This two-volume, slipcased set collects two decades of the groundbreaking underground/alternative anthology Wimmen's Comix.
This is an incredible collection of an amazing array of comix including some in 3-D. Not to be missed for a fan.

Cocktails for Drinkers: Not-Even-Remotely-Artisanal, Three-Ingredient-or-Less Cocktails That Get to the Point by Jennifer McCartney $14.95  It's the anti-hipster book for the person who just wants a good, simple cocktail. Period.

The Quick Six Fix by Stuart O'Keefe $27.99  Yet another attempt at simplicity. Preparing a meal doesn't need to be difficult or require a lot of time, celebrity chef Stuart O'Keeffe insists. If you work efficiently while keeping your space clean and cook with minimal yet flavorful ingredients, you can get a great meal from stove to table fast. In The Quick Six Fix, he offers dozens of delicious recipes for breakfast, salads, soups, pasta, fish, chicken, pork, beef, sides, and desserts that will get you in and out of the kitchen in thirty minutes or less. Each requires no more than 6 key ingredients, 6 minutes of prep work, and 6 minutes of clean up.

Half-Earth; Our Planet's Fight for Life by Edward O. Wilson $25.95  Demonstrating that we blindly ignore the histories of millions of other species, Wilson warns of a point of no return that is imminent. Angrily challenging the fashionable theories of Anthropocenes, who contend that humans can survive alone in an Edenic bubble engineered for their own survival, Wilson documents that the biosphere does not belong to us. Yet, refusing to believe that our extinction is, as so many fear, predetermined, Wilson has written Half-Earth as a cri de coeur, proposing that the only solution to our impending "Sixth Extinction" is to increase the area of natural reserves to half the surface of the earth.

And speaking of earth, we have a display of gardening books out since it's about that time to at least plan for what you'll grow now that we have some water in the dirt.

Younger Readers

All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook by Leslie Connor $16.95
Eleven-year-old Perry was born and raised by his mom at the Blue River Co-ed Correctional Facility in tiny Surprise, Nebraska. His mom is a resident on Cell Block C, and so far Warden Daugherty has made it possible for them to be together. That is, until a new district attorney discovers the truth-and Perry is removed from the facility and forced into a foster home.
When Perry moves to the "outside" world, he feels trapped. Desperate to be reunited with his mom, Perry goes on a quest for answers about her past crime. As he gets closer to the truth, he will discover that love makes people resilient no matter where they come from . . . but can he find a way to tell everyone what home truly means?  9 and up

Wing & Claw, Forest of Wonders by Linda Sue Park $16.99  Raffa Santana has always loved the mysterious Forest of Wonders. For a gifted young apothecary like him, every leaf has the potential to unleash a kind of magic. If only Raffa's cautious father would allow him to experiment freely, Raffa knows he could discover miracles. When an injured bat crashes into Raffa's life, he invents a cure from a rare crimson vine that he finds deep in the forest. The powers of the vine are stronger than Raffa could have imagined. His remedy saves the animal but also transforms it into something much more than an ordinary bat, with far-reaching consequences.  8 and up

Demon Dentist by David Williams $16.99
Beware.
This is a horror story.
With quite a lot of made-up words.
Darkness had come to the town. Strange things were happening in the dead of night. Children would put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, but in the morning they would wake up to find . . . a dead slug, a live spider, hundreds of earwigs creeping and crawling beneath their pillow. Evil was at work. But who or what was behind it . . . ?
(As fortune would have it, we received one copy with a cover that had no silver printing on it, a rare, if not horrifying, error on the part of the publisher. If you are a gambler, and would like to buy this one of a kind edition in the hopes of incredible riches in 25 or 30 years should this book win any major awards, we will allow it to be sold at face value. But you'd better really want it.)

Book Club Details!
We had a very productive planning meeting for the newly minted Laurel Book Store Book Club.
We will be meeting on the Third Thursday of each month, with a few moves to Tuesday when necessary.
6:15 to no later than 7:30.

The first meeting is on March 17 and we will talk about Bel Canto by Ann Patchett since most have already read it so that we can practice talking about a book in getting to know each other. As long as you've read something by her, it will qualify. If you haven't read her and still want to come, please do.
The intent is to read predominantly fiction, in paperback, with an occasional nonfiction book. Recommendations will come from members and perhaps each person will choose
one for a month's selection. We plan to choose books 3 months out so that we know what's on the horizon.
Won't you join us? Please drop us an email if you want to be informed as we go forward.

The event was a whole lot of fun! There weren't a ton of people who came but those who did came away with some new recipes and vowed to try them out and report back. We may do it again later this year.
Or how about a CD Swap? If interested, let us know.

Are you a Mama who Writes?
Would you appreciate even just a little dedicated time to do it?
