Teen Science Cafés: Keeping the STEAM Pipeline Open and Full

There are many leaky points in the STEAM pipeline, and one of the biggest leaks begins in high school. Without the inspiring stories of professionals that reveal the importance of real-world STEAM in everyone's life, and its many exciting career pathways, teens will too often opt out of STEAM. By offering free Teen Science Café programs that are open to all teens interested in understanding how STEAM impacts their lives, we keep the pipeline open and fill it with many exciting opportunities to explore the STEAM that matters to teens. In this webinar,
 attendees will be introduced to the
Teen Science Café concept, why they make a difference in teen lives, and resources for starting a teen science café program. The Teen Science Café Network is a vibrant community of practice that will support you throughout this endeavor.

Habitat Connections: Exploring Your Local Environment through Birds and Citizen Science
Seattle, WA; March 14, 2016; 9:00 AM-4:30 PM Pacific
Participants will be introduced to curriculum developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and will discover how to engage girls and boys (ages 8-13) through inquiry-based STEM instruction. Materials are aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core standards. A tour of the Ornithology exhibit at the Burke Museum and a short presentation on museum resources will be available. This free workshop is appropriate for K-12 formal and informal educators.

Participants will be introduced to a curriculum developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and will discover how to engage girls and boys ages 8-13 through inquiry-based STEM instruction. The workshop is appropriate for both K-12 and informal educators; no experience with birds or citizen science is required. Registration closes on March 15, 2016.

BirdSleuth: Habitat Connections Ornithology Curriculum for Afterschool Programs

Whether you are a teacher, afterschool educator, or an informal educator this free workshop will provide training and educational resources to engage children ages 8-13 in inquiry-based STEM activities. No matter your location or program space, BirdSleuth can help connect the kids to fun and engaging citizen science projects and inquiry-based outdoor experiences. Participants will take home a curriculum kit and have access to ongoing support provided by Cornell Lab and the Oregon Girls Collaborative Project.

We benefit from role models at all stages of our lives.
Meet Victoria Velez, Process Engineer at Boston Scientific. Victoria is a first generation Latina engineer who received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. Victoria said she often hears, "You're an engineer? You don't look like an engineer." Smithsonian Latino Center's Young Ambassadors Program (YAP)
Washington DC; June 19-25, 2016
YAP is a college preparatory and leadership program encouraging high school seniors to explore a wide range of academic and career opportunities through the lens of the Latino experience. Graduating seniors who have demonstrated interest and commitment to the arts, sciences, or humanities as it pertains to Latino communities will be selected to participate in a week long interdisciplinary training seminar in Washington DC, followed by a four-week internship in a museum or cultural center in the US and Puerto Rico. Application deadline is April 4, 2016.

Career Girls is a free, online platform which showcases video clips of diverse women role models sharing career and educational advice to inspire young girls to expand their horizons, improve their academic performance, and dream big about their futures. A recent website update makes it easier to search by interest or activities, to find role models, and includes a robust offering for educators with new lesson plan videos.
NCWIT's International Women's Day-in-a-Box
International Women's Day takes place each year on March 8 during Women's History Month, marking a time to celebrate women's achievements, call for change, and advocate for equality. The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) has designed the International Women's Day-in-a-Box resource to help IT companies and departments celebrate successes, address barriers to women's full participation in IT, and promote diversity to become globally competitive. |

The Tekla Festival is a free technology festival that Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Robyn organized for girls ages 11-18. Robyn explains in a five minute video, why the festival, originally proposed as a one-time event, will continue another year. She also discusses how to create conditions that deepen and develop girls interest in technology.
