BGE focuses our philanthropic efforts, including our charitable giving and volunteer hours, on programs that help improve the quality of life in the communities where our customers and employees live and work.  We're pleased to spotlight some recent activities.
BGE Green-Lights Regional Projects
that Protect the Environment
The company awards a total of $325,000 through third annual Green Grants program.

of the Carroll Lutheran School, whose Green Grant will support an outdoor STEM classroom
BGE toasted representatives from more than 50 nonprofit organizations this past October for their commitment to environmental preservation, protection and enhancement. Recipients of BGE's third annual Green Grants gathered for a reception at the Pearlstone Conference and Retreat Center in Reisterstown; the facility itself received a 2015 grant to install educational kiosks detailing its many eco-friendly improvements. This year, BGE awarded a total of $325,000 to groups in seven counties and Baltimore City.

"All of our guests this evening are working to encourage personal investment in our environment, something that is key if we are going to keep enjoying facilities like the Pearlstone Center for years to come," stated BGE CEO Calvin G. Butler Jr.

Since its inception, BGE's Green Grants program has provided more than $1,000,000 to organizations across central Maryland. This year's grants have underwritten projects including tree planting and maintenance in Catonsville, storm water management in Anne Arundel County and a community garden in Harford County.

The program is open to 501c3 nonprofit organizations located in BGE's service territory. Grants are awarded in the following focus areas: conservation, education, energy efficiency, pollution prevention and community engagement.

What a Difference a Day Makes in Carroll County's Dutterer Family Park
Play was work this past October as more than 100 BGE volunteers spent the day constructing jungle gyms and rock-climbing structures, painting and mulching as they created a new playground at Dutterer Family Park in Westminster.

The BGE team joined volunteers from the City of Westminster, Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County and the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster to bring to life drawings done by children at the Boys & Girls Club, who were asked to design their dream playground.  The project was guided by the play experts at KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to promoting and protecting a child's right to safe, active play at home, at school and in the community. The Dutterer Family Park project was the third KaBOOM!  build sponsored by BGE.  The new playground, which replaces aging and unsafe equipment, will serve more than 1,500 children in Westminster.

BGE employees from the Exelon African-American Resource Alliance (EAARA) also lent a hand at another KaBOOM! project in October, constructing a playground at the Gilmor Elementary School in Baltimore.

BGE to Plant Perennial Community Garden
As BGE celebrates its 200th anniversary next year as the first gas utility in the country, the company will cement its commitment to the community with some lasting gifts -- 100 to be exact.

Through a partnership with Art with a Heart, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of people in need through visual art, BGE's employee resource groups will create 100 flower-shaped pieces of art and "plant" them at locations across the region. Each group will design a unique mosaic flower that will incorporate BGE's 200th anniversary logo, demonstrating the diversity of the company and the communities we serve across central Maryland.  Flower projects will begin in Jan. 2016; to watch them blossom visit BGE's 200th anniversary website bge200.com, launching on Jan. 4.

BGE Emergency Response and Safety Grant Program Receives Philanthropy Award
BGE's program to help equip emergency response organizations with the tools they need to perform critical work recently received its own recognition.

In November, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and Baltimore Business Journal presented BGE with the Maryland Business Philanthropy Award in the large business category for the company's annual Emergency Response and Safety Grant program. To date, this program has provided nearly $1 million to 129 organizations in central Maryland. BGE will announce the next class of emergency response grant recipients in Jan. 2016.

A Tree Grows in Timonium
The annual Kennedy Krieger Festival of Trees is not only a Baltimore-area tradition, but a BGE tradition as well.

place at the 25
th   annual Kennedy Krieger Festival of Trees
The company has supported the festival since it began 25 year ago. This year employees and their families joined the festivities at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium to decorate trees with the theme, "Bundles of Joy."
The baby items on the trees will be donated to the Sarah's Hope shelter for homeless families in Baltimore.

BGE's sponsorship of the festival supports the Kennedy Krieger Institute, internationally recognized for its care of children and young adults with developmental disabilities.

BGE and parent company Exelon are also committed to providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities.  B GE CEO Calvin G. Butler Jr., who sits on Kennedy Krieger's board, recently spoke at a National Organization on Disabilities event regarding Exelon's programs to recruit, support and enable employees with special needs. This year, the Chimes Foundation honored Butler at its annual fundraiser to support the Chimes Family of Services, an organization providing employment, health and other services for people with special needs.

Employees proudly celebrate BGE's successful 2015 United Way campaign that raised almost $850,000 for community needs.

While the campaign has closed, support for local organizations continues into the holidays.  Employees have adopted more than 600 "angels" through the Salvation Army of Central Maryland, and will assist the organization with sorting thousands of donations of toys and clothing. Volunteers will also partner the Ronald McDonald House, the Believe in Tomorrow Children's House at Johns Hopkins and Christopher's Place to serve holiday meals.
