For artist Ian Booth, Kazakhstan, a country that holds roughly 130 different ethnic groups and boasts the ninth largest land mass in the world, is a diverse meeting-place that collides modernity with tradition, patriotism with a desire to leave. Booth's vivid photographic series,
Tselina/Building the Virgin Lands
, is his effort to capture and document the multitudes that are contained within Kazakhstan.
With his visual essay, or travelogue, Booth presents visually rich vignettes of Kazakhstan, s
panning candid portraits and expansive landscapes, ballet performances and circus bears, the majestic and the day-to-day.

A contemporary art museum's work centers around two questions: how do we interact with our community, and how do we and our community interact with contemporary art?
As we spring forward this March, we're continually preparing and looking for new avenues to uplift, engage, and interact with our community:
showcasing local artists, art talks, and education-centric exhibitions; leading tailored tours for diverse audiences; celebrating Utah through partnerships and events; and encouraging our community to explore what it means to exist in today's world.

ARTIST TALK
Presenting: Artist Yoshua Okón
Yoshua Okón's work blends staged situations, documentation, and improvisation to question habitual perceptions of reality and truth. In 2014, UMOCA presented Okón's
Octopus
, a video installation of day laborers who restaged scenes from the Guatemalan Civil War in a Home Depot parking lot.
Okón's 2015 multi-channel video installation,
Oracle
(produced in conjunction with the ASU Art Museum), is currently on show at UMOCA. This sequel to
Octopus
explores similar questions of immigration and national borders through the documentation of reenacted scenes.
Meet the artist tomorrow at the University of Utah, when
Okón will present a free artist talk and discuss his work.

Areas for Action
In 2015, Oliver Herring collaborated with over 400 students from several Utah County institutions. Herring's response-based performance structure,
Areas for Action
, asks participants to
respond to situations and environments, fostering experimentation, play, and exploration of what unfolds in such unique situations.
The practice
offers a chance for students to flourish in a chaotic, response-driven environment while appealing to educators who embrace learning as a complex phenomenon. Bring your high schoolers to the museum on Saturday, March 5, to take part in a new Areas for Action experience.

On Thursday, March 31, Love UT Give UT will bring the community together by connecting individuals to local nonprofit organizations.
Hosted by the Community Foundation of Utah, Love UT Give UT emphasizes community involvement from both organizations and individuals. Each year, UMOCA looks forward to the 24-hour fundraiser and the ways it brings us together through impact and engagement.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT
Daniel & Noemi Mattis
After moving to Utah in 1980, Daniel and Noemi Mattis, a University of Utah physics professor and a psychiatrist, have been powerful voices in remembering the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. Their efforts lead to the formation of the Sousa Mendes Foundation, which honors the legacy of the Portuguese diplomat who saved Daniel's family's lives in the 1940s. The Mattis' have also been longtime, illustrious supporters of the community, including UMOCA and the arts in general. Thank you, Daniel and Noemi, for your work in memorializing the past, uplifting the community, and making for a better future!
