Recycling Reel: Behind the Scenes at Bestway

 Sodacans, water bottles, milk cartons, glass jars, notebook paper - there's a good chance you've recently tossed one these items into a recycling bin. But have you ever wondered what happens to them afterwards? Sure, they're "recycled," but how in the world does that old essay you never want to see again become... new paper? This summer, some sleuths from the Office of Sustainability did some digging to find out more.We took a field trip to the Bestway Disposal MRF, or Material Recovery Facility, where our recyclables are separated, processed, collated, and shipped to manufacturers to make "new" aluminum, plastic, glass, paper and more.

Tips for Bike Beginners
|
Using a bike as a main source of transportation can seem a bit daunting to new cyclists, especially when they take it on alone. Cycling doesn't have to be a solo sport though, and there are resources readily available to those in need of help, including educational clinics hosted at UCCS's very own SOLE center. The SOLE Center also has a bike workshop that offers free services such as brake adjustment, derailleur adjustment, tire changes, and hub adjustment. New cyclists could definitely learn a lot about bike confidence and maintenance at the SOLE Center, even experienced riders could learn a thing or two.

UCCS Police Thwart Bicycle Thieves, Provide Theft Prevention Tips |
Following a string of bike thefts that plagued campus during the summer session, the UCCS Police Department recently arrested two suspects and recovered a number of bikes thanks to old fashioned detective work.
According to the department, seven bikes were stolen from campus between July 7 and 16.
"The trend appeared pretty quickly. We had two bikes stolen within two hours, so our first step was to send acampus wide email giving people a heads up," Officer Jerod Heidrick said. "Our next step was starting to dig around and hit up pawn shops, which are the go-to places to get rid of stolen goods."

Green Action Fund Update

The Green Action Fund (GAF) was created to reduce theecological footprint of UCCS and promote sustainable environmental, social and economic values through a variety of student-sponsored projects. The GAF Committee is a student run organizationwith a couple of faculty and staffadvisers. The committee reviews, rates and approves projects with the intent of creating a more sustainable campus culture.

Students for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability Update
|
S.E.A.S. was founded in 2003 by a group of impassioned students, including our very own Linda Kogan, that wanted to bring sustainability to UCCS. S.E.A.S. is a student-run group that aims to educate the campus about conservation and sustainability practices. S.E.A.S. has been actively initiating change at UCCS, including taking the lead on the first UCCS LEED gold building, implementing the successful Take Back the Tap campaign, establishing the Heller student garden, and leading the UCCS divestment campaign.
- Meetings: Every other Wednesday 10:30 a.m. @ University Center
- Student Garden - Located in the Heller Center, the Student Garden is aimed towards forming a permaculture with sustainable design, promoting the importance of mindfulness when it comes to the environment.
