Start an Elementary School Garden with Free Plants
The San Diego Regional School Garden Resource Center assists educators interested in using the garden as a tool to teach about nutrition, agriculture, nature, and other school subjects.
During their school plant giveaway, interested elementary schools may sign up to receive vegetable and herb seedlings just in time for spring planting. Supplies are limited, so sign up early.

iVIE Competition Looking for Awards Show Hosts
The San Diego County Office of Education is looking for energetic and expressive elementary, middle, and high school students to present the winning videos at the Innovative Video in Education (iVIE) Student Film Festival and Awards.
Auditions for aspiring hosts will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. March 23 in National City;
March 24 in Linda Vista; and March 29 in San Marcos. T
he awards show is April 23 at Coronado High School.

McDonald's Offering Scholarships for Hispanic Students
The Ronald McDonald House Charities/Hispanic Commitment to Education Resources (HACER) scholarship program is accepting applications from San Diego County high school students of Hispanic descent.
Students must have at least one parent of Hispanic descent, strong academic performance, and a personal drive to give back to the community.

High School Seniors Get A Chance at a New Laptop for College
The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), Coca-Cola, and the San Diego County Office of Education will award new laptops to 40 lucky winners through the
Annual Laptop Scholarship Contest for High School Seniors.
The 2016 High School Laptop Scholarship Essay Contest is open to all seniors currently enrolled in a San Diego County high school. This year the
1,000-word persuasive essay must be accompanied by photographs taken by the student.

NSFA Announces Regional Workshop in San Diego
The National School Foundation Assocation (NSFA) will be holding
a regional workshop in San Diego hosted by National University's Sanford Institute of Philanthropy. The all-day workshop will take place on April 7.
Sessions will focus on: The Changing Role of Foundations in Community Engagement (
California Consortium of Education Foundations
); Effective Marketing for School Foundations; Partnering with Your Community - Alumni and Business Involvement; and Fundraising - Raising Private Funds for Public Schools.

The Chargers Champions school grant program is offering $250,000 in grants to help San Diego county schools meet
some of the physical fitness, nutrition and athletic needs of their
students.
The program annually provides selected schools with grants of up to
$75,000 for high schools; up to $40,000 for middle schools; and up to $30,000 for
elementary schools.

Juniors Chargers Training Camps are a free, non-contact, football inspired program designed to teach children the basics of football, exercise, and sportsmanship. Camps are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more and register here.

Global Learning
Opportunity
Global Forest Link is seeking five middle or high schools from San Diego County to collaborate on a free, innovative project with Russian peers and help environmentalists worldwide conduct important research about forest change.
Participants will learn the basics of environmental remote sensing using satellite images. This project covers
environmental sciences, international studies, digital media production, student broadcasting and journalism, and service-learning.
Receive a 45-minute presentation from GFL's staff at your location and be invited to engage in live, interactive U.S.-Russia teleconferences.
Activities will take place during March and April.

Be a Part of the Torero Achievement Club
Nothing beats going to a university and getting a firsthand view of a college to validate one's interest in pursuing a college education. USD's Torero Achievement Club - a partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education - is a fun way for kids to have this experience.
School groups from grades 3 through 8 are invited to attend an upcoming USD baseball or women's softball game and take a campus tour. Teachers are encouraged to select classes who have demonstrated outstanding or improved attendance, achievement or behavior.

USD Character Development Center's 20th Annual "Character Matters" Essay Contest
USD's Character Development Center announces its annual "Character Matters" essay contest. This is an opportunity for insightful classroom discussion and personal reflection, while engaging in the Common Core State Writing Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Sciences, and Technical subjects.
The contest has three divisions and is open to students from grades 4 to 12. Awards are available for students and teachers.

Free Documentary Film-Making Summer Program for High School Students
Reel Voices is a 12-week summer internship program with the Pacific Arts Movement that is open to high school students in San Diego who are interested in film-making.
Up to 12 students are chosen to participate through a competitive application process. The program is free and also offers students a $500 scholarship upon completion.

Take a Free Field Trip and Highlight Your Students' Work at the Fair
The San Diego County Fair provides several educational programs for San Diego Schools: Plant*Grow*Eat, the field trip program, and school tours. Program deadlines are in March and April.
Enter your classroom's work into the fair and receive recognition, fair admission tickets and a rosette ribbon for your classroom.
The creative Youth/Best of K-6 exhibit has over 15,000 youth and classroom projects including art, robotics, missions, science, writing, and more. The deadline for entries is May 4.
The Student Showcase exhibit features over 9,000 entries from 7th grade through college on art, photography, drafting, fashion design, graphic design, videography, woodworking, and more. The deadline for entries is May 6.

"With+Math=I Can" Offered by Amazon
Amazon recently launched its "With+Math=I Can" initiative to help more students overcome their aversion to mathematics and science and explore possible careers in these fields.
At the center of the initiative is a pledge targeting teachers, students, and parents to shift from "fixed mindset" to "growth mindset" instruction in math. Free resources are available for teachers to learn about what it means to have a growth mindset, lesson plans, and more.

How to Talk to Parents About Their Child's Attendance
Speaking with parents about their child's attendance is not always an easy task. The California Attorney General's "Toolkit on Attendance Communication Strategies" provides excellent tips on best practices for communication with parents.
Some tips from the toolkit include:
- Refer to absences by month, rather than year. Parents systematically underestimate attendance on a yearly basis.
- Highlight the downsides of absences, not the upsides of attendance. Get parents to think about what they are missing.
