Unilever announces global zero waste achievement
Over 600 Unilever Sites Have Eliminated Waste to Landfill

Unilever reached a new industry-leading achievement of sending zero non-hazardous waste to landfill across more than 600 sites, in 70 countries, including factories, warehouses, distribution centres and offices. Having identified the different non-hazardous waste streams in its operations Unilever has now found alternative routes for the waste from these sites.

In January 2015 Unilever announced that over 240 factories had achieved zero waste to landfill status - by replicating this zero waste model in other parts of the business, nearly 400 additional sites have now eliminated waste to landfill. This has been achieved by continuing with the four 'R' approach of reducing, reusing, recovering or recycling, proving that waste can be seen as a resource with many alternative uses - from converting factory waste to building materials, to composting food waste from staff cafeterias.  Here more about Unilever's Zero Waste successes and challenges from Julie Zaniewski, Unilever Packaging Sustainability Manager at the CRA Annual Conference!

ACC reports increased recycling of rigid/film plastics
Rigid Plastics Recycling Surges 27%; Film Recycling Grows 3%

The recycling of post-consumer rigid plastics surged 276 million pounds, or 27 percent, in 2014 to reach a new high of over 1.28 billion pounds for the year, according to a report authored by Moore Recycling Associates Inc. The 2014 National Postconsumer Non-Bottle Rigid Plastic Recycling Report also indicated that the reported volume of recycled rigid plastics-tracked separately from bottles or film-is now four times greater than the volume reported in just 2007.

A separate report found a minimum of 1.17 billion pounds of postconsumer plastic film was recycled in 2014, an increase of over 29 million pounds, or 3 percent, from the prior year. The 2014 National Postconsumer Plastic Bag and Film Recycling Report, also authored by Moore Recycling, marks the tenth consecutive year of the report, and a 79 percent increase in plastic film recycling since 2005. Based on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the recycling rate for film has grown from 6.6 percent to 17 percent of production during the same period.
