Board approves bond referendum for May 24
Bond for facility improvements moves forward

At its February 25 meeting, the Big Lake School Board approved a resolution scheduling a bond referendum on Tuesday, May 24 for $10 million in facility improvements.
 
The ballot will contain two questions. Question one will ask voters to approve $9 million in bonds to improve facilities district-wide focusing on safety and security, playgrounds and other site improvements, and fine arts/athletics. Question two will ask voters to approve $1 million in bonds to construct a multi-purpose synthetic turf field.    Read more.


Big Lake High School ranks 14th in state for highest graduation rate

Big Lake High School's 2015 graduation rate ranks in the top 10 percent of Minnesota school districts with graduating classes of 100 or more students, according to data released by the Minnesota Department of Education this week.
 
Big Lake's graduating class of 2015 posted a 97.3 percent graduation rate compared to the state average of 81.9 percent. Big Lake High School's graduation rate has steadily increased year-over-year for the past three years-up 8.9 percent since 2012.     Read more.


Grades go head-to-head in friendly battle of the books competition

Several weeks of preparation by Liberty and Independence elementary students came to a culmination Tuesday during Literacy Night's Battle of the Books competition.
 
Liberty and Independence grade levels competed against each other in the event by answering questions about different books their grades have been reading over the past few weeks. While assistant principals, Mr. Sawatzke and Ms. Smock-Potter, kept a mental tally of correct answers, no official score was kept.   Read more.


Sixth graders treated to Civil War reenactment speakers

Did you know Civil War soldiers were issued playing cards and dice to pass the time, or that the Union and Confederate soldiers would stop mid-battle for a coffee break? Sixth graders at Big Lake Middle School learned these facts and more from a Big Lake family of three who shared their love and knowledge of the American Civil War.     Read more.
