Two St. Bon's Alumni Receive National Historic Designations
Lieutenant Colonel Padre Thomas Nangle C.F '1909
Two St. Bonaventure's College Alumni are among 38 new National Historic Designations announced earlier this month.

Lieutenant Colonel Padre Thomas Nangle C.F '1909 and James Patrick Howley were named as people of historic significance to Canada.

James Patrick Howley  was a geologist and surveyor who documented the Bay du Nord river system deep in the interior of the Island. As well he recorded the known history of the Beothuck people, a work that still stands the test of time.

Howley graduated St. Bonaventure's College somewhere between 1856 and 1860, according to our resident historian Brother Darcy. If you have any further records on this please let us know.

James Patrick Howley
World War 1 Chaplain Thomas Nangle was recognized for his efforts in creating the "Trail of the Caribou" a series of monuments at each of the five major battlefields where Newfoundlanders fought. He led the exhuming, identification and proper burial of hundreds of Newfoundland boys.

The St. John's native was born in 1889 and became the "padre" of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment after the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel.

After returning home, he was instrumental in erecting caribou monuments on sites where Newfoundlanders had fallen, and helped create of the National War Memorial in St. John's.

Those are two outstanding men from St. Bonaventure's College who are deserving of the recognition for their contributions to this country.

Renovations to Historic Building Begins
If you have visited Mullock Hall in the past several months you may have noticed a fresh refinished front entranceway.  This is the first step in a multi-level project to renew and revitalize the front entryway and hallways of the building.

St. Bonaventure's College is proud of it's heritage and not just the history of the school but in the historic building itself. Keeping it up to date is a large ongoing project that will continue as the available funds allow.

If you are interested in supporting this initiative you can donate below under "Greatest Need."

2016 ECOSOC Youth Forum

The ECOSOC Youth Forum took place  February  1-2 at the  UN Headquarters in New York.  Young leaders from all over the World discussed ways in which young people can play an active role in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Our very own Charlotte Genest '15 was in attendance.

The forum also addressed how the youth can best communicate on the Agenda, bringing on board the innovative use of social media and other communication tools.  It is a platform for youth to engage in dialogue with Member States and contribute to policy formulation on global economic, social and environmental issues.

Charlotte's full report on the event is online. Read it now.

Alumni Profiles: Cyril Fox '48
There are not too many people that can say being a Rhodes Scholar runs in the family. But Cyril Fox joined the elite group of Scholars in 1952, 41 years after the same honour was given to his father's cousin John Edward Fox.

Before becoming a Rhodes Scholar, Cyril attended St. Bon's from 1937 to 1948. While here he excelled in dramatics, oratoricals, debates and the glee club. With such love for the written and spoken word it is no surprise that Cy spent more than 50 years in journalism.

After leaving St. Bon's he spent a year at MUN before transferring to St. Francis Xavier University and obtaining a BA in History. He then attended Merton College at Oxford studying law for two years but after an illness forced him to take time off from his studies he realized journalism was his passion and he enrolled in Columbia where he obtained his MA in modern art in 1959.

He then started a career working for the Associated Press, Canadian Press and Reuthers. His work has brought him to New Jersey, Montreal, London, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Paris, Brussels and more.

During his 50 years as a Reuters and Associated Press journalist, Cy amassed a vast collection of works by English painter and writer Wyndham Lewis and other 20th century non-conformist artists. Cy donated his  impressive collection  to the University of Victoria libraries  Special Collections  in 2006-07.

Then in 2009 Cy released a book of his own "New World, Old World : Bridging the North Atlantic. "

Cy came back to visit his Alma Mater last year and has set up an award for a grade 12 graduating student in his father's name.
