NEC Future Public Meeting

According to necfuture.com, "NEC FUTURE is a comprehensive planning effort to define, evaluate and prioritize future investments in the Northeast Corridor (NEC), launched by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in February 2012. FRA's work will include new ideas and approaches to grow the region's intercity, commuter and freight rail services and an environmental evaluation of proposed transportation alternatives.  

 

The FRA is hosting public open house meetings to introduce the alternatives that will be evaluated in the Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). All are welcome to attend and arrive at any time during the meeting. The open house will consist of displays outlining the NEC FUTURE program, the Tier 1 EIS Alternatives, and the next steps in the environmental review process."  The Delaware public meeting will be held on November 20, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Delaware Technical Community College.  To learn more, please visit  www.necfuture.com/get_involved/public_meetings.aspx.

President Obama Announces New Climate Resilience Measures
According to a White House release, "President Obama announced a new set of tools to harness the unique scientific and technological capabilities of the United States to help vulnerable populations around the world strengthen their climate resilience. Global Carbon Project Estimates Record CO2 Emissions in 2014
According to a Global Carbon Project release, "An annual report from the Global Carbon Project predicts that global CO2 emissions will top 44 billion tons, a new record, in 2014. The Global Carbon Project, comprised of an international group of scientists who monitor the global carbon cycle. This year's analysis found that current emissions are on track to cause global temperature increases between 3.2 and 5.4 degrees Celsius by 2100, and that 'large and sustained' carbon emissions mitigation measures will be required to hold the temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius." Walk to School Month 

According to an October 6th National Center for Safe Routes to School release, "On Wednesday, October 8, thousands of students, parents and communities representing more than 4,300 schools across the United States will walk and bicycle to school to celebrate International Walk to School Day. This one-day event in the U.S. is part of an international effort in more than 40 countries to celebrate the many benefits of safely walking and bicycling to school and to encourage more families to consider getting out of the car and onto their feet on the way to school in October." One Easy Thing Any City Can Do To be More Pedestrian Friendly 

According to an October 7th Wired article, "There are many ways cities can make their public spaces safer and more inviting for pedestrians. But there is one easy, cost-effective, and quick thing just about any city can do to make itself more pedestrian-friendly: Use building and landscape details to make people feel welcome and comfortable. The idea comes from a report by the non-profit SPUR (originally called the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association), which laid out seven ways to make any city more pedestrian-friendly.
