JUNE 2015 ISSUE

THIS DAY IN HISTORY
July 3, 1996:

Merging of Railroads. On this day in 1996, railroad giants Union Pacific and Southern Pacific merged after a year of legal and political problems. Many voiced concerns over this merger, especially shipping merchants and consumers who feared this would curtail competition making transportation costs higher.

COULD YOU SURVIVE A PAY CUT?

Let's just be honest, let's just be real, no one wants to think about money in a negative fashion or having less of it but could you survive a pay cut if it happened next payday? If your direct deposit from payroll was 5 or 10 percent shorter than the norm, how would you cope? We ask this question because each time someone takes a new job it could be a lateral move from an income perspective or a pay cut forced onto the individual but we all seem to find a way to make it work on the first few paychecks (pay increase or decrease, we make it work). New pay, new benefits, new travel arrangements, we make it work so we can throw out the excuse about having enough money.

Theoretically speaking, as of June 2015, there's 59% of the population or approximately 149 million people in the United States surviving a pay cut. This is due to taxes and benefits, your gross pay is X and your net pay is Y, case in point:

Gross Paycheck $2,100.00

Deductions:

> Federal Income Tax $194.00

> Medicare $28.13

> Social Security $120.28

> State Withholding $58.20

> Health Insurance $120.00

> Dental Insurance $10.00

> 401K/403B Retirement $105.00

Net Paycheck $1,458.20 (69% of gross paycheck)

In the example above, the individual is living off a 31% pay cut (100 percent minus 69 percent). If they've become accustom to such net paycheck for a while now, what's another 5% cut worth from the gross: New Net Paycheck $1,353.20 a difference of $105 per pay.

Challenge yourself to live off of 5% less than you current gross for one month then push it up to 7.5% two months thereafter! To find the percentage of pay you take home, just divide the net paycheck amount into the gross amount. Budget as if the direct deposit or paycheck is 5% less based on gross (take your gross paycheck amount and multiply it by 0.05, take that amount and immediately place into a savings account).
