Dear NBTS Alumni,
In May of 1976 I became an alumnus of New Brunswick Seminary. I have been thinking a great deal recently about how different the seminary was forty years ago. When Vicki and I arrived in the late summer of 1974 there were about fifty students, most of them were male, most RCA, almost all of us were residential and just out of college. As you well know, the Seminary of 2016 is dramatically different, and yet the same. Most of our students are commuters, many are second career or bi-vocational, about 70% of our students are people of color, more than half are women, and one out of every five students were born outside the United States.
What happened? The creation of the Evening Theological Program in the 1970s under the leadership of then President Howard Hageman, made theological education more accessible through evening courses. We became more contextual and richly diverse because of the presence of a growing number of candidates from a multitude of denominations in the New York metropolitan area. A new strategy helped create a new seminary!
At the same time, the core values and vision that founded the seminary in 1784, making theological education more accessible in the new world, was a strong and durable foundation for this new seminary. We journeyed into a new future through a remarkable past.
We are grateful that you have remained loyal to our mission and filled with affection for our community of faith and learning. May God walk with you in this Lenten journey which will lead us back to the cross and forward through an empty tomb filled with resurrection hope.

A Conversation About the RCA's Arabian Mission with Jerzy Zdanowski, a historian and Arabist and a Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw/Poland. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Rutgers University and a recipient of the Kuwaiti and Jordanian Governments grants and the "haut niveau," the French Government fellowship (La Maison Mediterranéenne des Sciences de l'Homme, Aix-en-Provence). His presentation is based on documents from the archives of Hope College in Holland, Michigan, NBTS, and the Archives of the Reformed Church in America. He also visited The Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia (PA),The Library of the Princeton Theological Seminary, The Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary in NYC, and The Al Amana Centre in Muscat.

Kate Lynch, a New York-based researcher, educator, and philosopher, will present the results of her research on "The Reformed Church, Rutgers, and the Revolution." Colonel Theunis Dey, a charter member of Queens College (Rutgers), a member of the New Jersey Assembly and colonel of the Bergen County Militia, and a host to Gen. Washington and his "family" (Hamilton, Greene, Knox, LaFayette, Varick and the Schuylers), embodied the spirit of religious and political independence as a fourth generation Dutch-American. Many of Dey's sons and daughters and other Dutch-Americans who fought in his regiment carried their religion with them to western New York, founding Reformed Churches in the 1820s in Lodi, Ovid, and Tyre in Seneca County whose ministers were graduates of the NBTS.

David Alexander is a long-time RCA missionary to Taiwan who was recently awarded the Order of the Brilliant Star with Violet Grand Cordon from Taiwan's president Ma Ying-jeou, an award normally given to Taiwan citizens (and occasionally to foreigners) in recognition of a high degree of service to the nation over many years. He will talk about his work at Tainan Theological College and Seminary, where he teaches practical theology and language courses, and at Aletheia University, where he teaches translation skills to undergraduate students.
The suggested donation for dinner is $15.00/person, free for all NBTS students, faculty, and staff.

NBTS faculty members Jaeseung Cha and Allan Janssen, President Gregg Mast, and Daniel Meeter, pastor of Old First Reformed Church in Brooklyn, will reflect on liturgy as drama, liturgy as part of church order, and the Sacraments of the Lord's Supper and Baptism in Reformed Worship, and David Alexander, Poppen-Young Fellow in Reformed Worship for 2016-17, will present his adaptations of Taiwanese indigenous hymnody for English-speaking RCA congregations. A time of creative Reformed worship will begin the day.
