Board Member Update
Let's welcome Michael Munson and thank Cindy O'Dell. We will miss you Cindy!
Michael was raised in Missoula and identifies with her Sqelixw (Salish & Pend d'Oreille) backgrounds most. She currently serves her communities as Faculty in the Elementary Education and the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Science Education programs at Salish Kootenai College. Michael is also doctoral candidate in the Indian Leadership Education and Development (I LEAD) program at Montana State University and serves as secretary and Higher Education Representative for the Montana Indian Education Association. Her passion in life is to work with communities to build and improve educational opportunities for Native students, as well as their own school systems, which will contribute to academic and life success, leadership, agency and tribal development.

Suzi Taylor Recognized for Excellence in Outreach
Montana Girls STEM Collaborative Co-leader wins award
Suzi Taylor, assistant director of outreach and communications for Montana State University Extended University and co-leader of the Montana Girls STEM Collaborative, won the Excellence in Outreach Award.
The award was presented at the MSU Spring Convocation on January 12th, 2016.

Jessi Smith elected into APA and APS
National Girls Collaborative member representing Montana elected to prestigious
societies
Jessi Smith, a Montana State University psychology professor and National Girls Collaborative Champions Board member, has been awarded fellowship into the American Psychological Association and Association for Psychological Science.
The award is granted for sustained outstanding contributions to the science of psychology in the areas of research, teaching, service, and/or application.
Congratulations Jessi!

Girls STEM Round-up
Register for the event and choose from 16 different workshops
Exploration Works is honored to present the 5th annual Girls' STEM Round-up for girls 5th through 8th grade. The STEM Round-up inspires Montana's girls to become our next generation of science, technology, engineering, and math career women. We Are Montana in the Classroom University of Montana role models visit k-12 schools
We are Montana in the Classroom is a program at the University of Montana that places University of Montana faculty members, graduate students, and professionals in k-12 classrooms, with the goal of inspiring students about higher education and career pathways. In autumn 2015, over 5,000 Montana k-12 students experienced hands- and minds-on activities guided by UM role models, both digitally and face to face. In the spring of 2016, we have a number of role model engagement experiences booked. On February 12th, five female UM role models will visit the Hamilton Middle School 8th grade girls camp.

Gallatin Girls Coding Club Field Trip
Exploring careers in technology in Bozeman Montana
In January, Schedulicity and Workiva, two local tech companies in Bozeman, were generous enough to treat the Gallatin Girls Coding Club to tours of their facilities. They also prepared demonstrations of what they do. The field trip started at Schedulicity, where the girls were welcomed with juice boxes and snacks followed by a tour of all the departments. The women of Schedulicity then met with all of the girls and talked about being a women in the tech field, and how they got where they are today. Then, the club headed over to Workiva, where they saw the power of the standing desk! (desks for working while standing up). After a tour of their gorgeous facility, the girls were treated to pizza while they spoke to the women developers of Workiva. The field trip was definitely an enlightening and inspiring event for the GGCC.
The GGCC received a Girls' STEM mini-grant in 2013.

LittleBigPlanet Club - Team KAIZEN, Montana's First PlayStation Certified Game Studio, is teaming up again with the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art to offer LittleBigPlanet Club! The collaboration earned a Girls STEM mini-grant in 2013. Participants will learn how to make video games using Sony's LittleBigPlanet 3. Event is open to girls and boys in grades 4th-12th. Join them

CodeGirl Movie and 2016 Technovation Challenge
- Devin and Christine Holmes are bringing the documentary film CodeGirl to Missoula and Bozeman. The film follows young women from around the world ages 9-19 who participate in the annual Technovation Challenge to build an app that addresses a problem in their communities. In 2015, Montana had one team from Missoula, but this year
the
couple hopes to raise visibility of the opportunity and encourage more girls to participate. Girls for a Change Think Tank - Discover the power of story in our lives as girls and women. Join them at the Story Mansion for a free night of insight and creativity as we forge our own stories. Dinner and drinks will be provided. Only 20 spots are available for women 18 and over and 20 for girls in grades 8-12th (parent permission required). Click here for more information. STEM Billings
- The next outreach event is called Energy and Engineering. Participants will learn how oil and gas deposits are formed, how they are discovered, and how they are safely refined for everyday use. The event is open to kids in grades k-6 in the Billings area. To register visit

NanoDays/MicroDays at MSU-Bozeman - NanoDays is a celebration of the small! Learn about nanoscale nanoscale science and engineering through hands-on activities and demonstrations for kids and adults. Help build a carbon nanotube, try the electric squeeze, play with nanosand and get a nano tattoo! new this year is the addition of micro-scale research, including information about the micro-organisms that live in

Girls-N-Science (formerly Chicks in Science) - This one-day science extravaganza at MSU-Billings provides hands-on, minds-on interactive activities to introduce girls in 4thÂ-8th grades to careers in STEM; to encourage and excite them to pursue education in those areas; and to facilitate relationships between the girls and professional women in scientific disciplines. New this year--STEM Stars: Three 45-minute learning opportunities will take place just for 7th and 8th grade girls. A word from your Volunteer In Service To America:
Hello everyone!
So far, I have enjoyed talking to several STEM program organizations in Montana. Thank you for all that you do. There are so many cool projects and opportunities for our youth to learn about STEM careers and participate in engaging projects and activities.
In January, I gave a presentation at Thrive called "Inspire Tomorrow's Innovators: Add Science and Technology to Your CAP Mentoring." The workshop covered the SciGirls Seven, Fixed vs. Growth Mindsets, and STEM programming opportunities available in Bozeman and online. This was a great opportunity for me to put together what I learned in Missoula to work. For those of you who didn't get the last newsletter, last year, I traveled to Missoula to learn about Role Models Matter and SciGirls. My next goal is to train interested MSU students in Role Models Matter, an initiative to prepare STEM professional for outreach.
I also participated in Montana Campus Compact's Read for Peace event. We read books about MLK at different after school programs in Bozeman and reached out to 90 students. After reading, we discussed the importance of MLK's message and let the students draw their dream for a better world. You can find their drawings at the Bozeman Public Library during the month of February in celebration of National Black History Month.
