Montana's Pledge Toward One Million Women Mentors
NGCP Collaboratives are connecting to the Million Women Mentors Movement! The MWM project is dedicated to increasing the percentages of young women in STEM fields, by:
- providing tools to help STEM professionals become more effective and engaged mentors,
- facilitating collaborations between corporations and non-profits and educational groups, and
- providing best practices for mentoring, along with a national call to action for mentorship of young women of all ages.
As part of this call to action, the Texas collaborative pledged 20,000 mentors (their fair share of 1 million). How many fantastic women mentors does Montana have? Climate Change and National Security:
People Not Polar Bears
 David Titley, Rear Admiral (ret.) and Professor of Meteorology, will visit Montana in July. His visit is a direct result of Montana Girls STEM Collaborative Mini-grant funding that sent four Montana teen girls to Rutgers University for their Teen Climate and Environment Summit so they could bring ideas back to Montana!
Titley will give a public talk on July 8. On July 9-10, and will participate in the Youth Climate Science Initiative, joining Montana teens attending the Montana 4-H Congress on field trips and workshops to learn about the impacts of climate change on agriculture and mountain ecosystems. He is also planning to meet with students in the MSU Leadership Institute, as well as faculty, staff and administrators with the Montana Institute on Ecosystems.

Collaboration Institute in Kansas City
On April 7-10, 2014, Jan Lombardi (Helena) and Suzi Taylor (Bozeman)
attended the National Girls' Collaborative Project's Collaboration Institute
in Kansas City, Missouri. Team members from new and returning Collaboratives across the U.S. met to learn how to effectively lead NGCP activities in their states. Participants engaged in multiple sessions designed to assist in outreach and implementation. Suzi was asked to present on the "Impact of NGCP in Montana," highlighting our mini-grant partnership with the Women's Foundation of Montana and other stories about impacts in our state.
The National Girls Collaborative Project currently serves 31 Collaboratives, serving 39 states, that facilitate collaboration between 12,800 organizations serving 8.3 million girls. This event proceeded the Missouri Collaborative Conference and Missouri After-school Alliance Conference.

TechBridge Training
SpectrUM, Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming and MGSC Collaboration Success!
 On Sunday, May 4th, the University of Montana spectrUM Discovery Area hosted a professional development training for 20 educators about engaging girls in science, technology, engineering, and math, and how to effectively incorporate role models into programming. This training featured curriculum and strategies developed by SciGirls and Techbridge, two leaders in the field of gender-sensitive programming a
nd engagement. Educators from around the state participated in the training,
learning effective strategies through hands-on activities, role play, and discussion. They participated in engineering design challenges, such as creating a neutrally buoyant object, called a "flinker". This training was a collaboration between the Montana Girls STEM Collaborative, Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming, and spectrUM. In the coming year, spectrUM hopes to partner with Techbridge to host a to host a training for UM faculty in the sciences, as a way to better engage faculty in recruitment and engagement efforts in an authentic manner.

The Montana Girls STEM Collaborative has had to say goodbye to some incredible leadership team members--all have moved on to different positions or life adventures. We wish them well, and thank them for everything (especially nominating their replacements, whom we'll introduce in our next newsletter!)
