Vehicles will not be able to cross North Rampart Street at Esplanade Avenue for five to six weeks as crews install tracks for the new Rampart-St. Claude Avenue streetcar line.

While the intersection is closed, traffic on Esplanade, including the Jackson-Esplanade bus line, will be rerouted to U-turns that have been opened on North Rampart.

For lakebound drivers, that means taking a right on Rampart and turning around at St. Bernard Avenue to get back to Esplanade. Riverbound drivers will take a right on Rampart and U-turn at Gov. Nicholls Street.

One lane of traffic in each direction on Rampart will remain open during construction.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO HOLD ABANDONED VEHICLE AUCTION

NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016 the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works will hold its first abandoned vehicle auction of 2016. The auction, located at Almonaster Auto Pound, 10200 Almonaster Avenue, will begin at 9 a.m.

Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 26 vehicle auctions, selling 2,732 abandoned cars and contributing over $1,838,817 to the City's General Fund.

As in prior auctions, the buyer will pay a $50 administrative fee which gets the buyer a notarized title at time of payment. This feature has been extremely well received by the public as the buyers no longer have to take all of the documentation to the Division of Motor Vehicles to apply for a new title. This process has proven that it saves the citizens time and streamlines their purchase.

The current auction will have 72 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.

Abandoned vehicles take up parking spaces needed for traffic circulation, contribute to a sense of neglect in neighborhoods, and can become junked harborages for rats and mosquitoes. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works has towed 1,573 vehicles in 2016 through Feb. 6, 2016.

Online Bidding: Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue use of its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time by visiting www.brownsauction.com. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction, get vehicle information online by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Pound.

All prospective buyers must register before viewing. A refundable $50 fee is required to view and/or bid on any vehicle during the auction. The fee will be applied to any purchase made or refunded if no purchase is made.

Brown's Auction Company from Lafayette, LA, is the State of Louisiana's licensed, authorized dealer and conducts auctions on all City of New Orleans equipment.

Individuals interested in purchasing a car are encouraged to pre-register today and to arrive early on Thursday as many cars sell within the first few minutes of the auction.

Quick Facts
  • All vehicle information is currently on Brown's Auction Web site, www.brownsauction.com. Per the terms of the contract, the available vehicle list includes the VIN, make, model, and lien holder information. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown's Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.
  • The current auction was advertised on Friday, Feb. 12, 2016.
  • Prior to the auction, attempts are made to contact the vehicle's owner or lien holder before the vehicles are added to the auction list. Vehicle owners or lien holders that pay all fines and fees are able to retrieve their vehicles prior to the auction.
Purchasing a vehicle
  • Cash or cashier's check required
  • Payment must be received on the day of the auction. If payment is not received, the purchased vehicle will be placed on the list for the next scheduled auction, the buyer's $50 deposit is
  • forf eited and the bidder is barred from participation in future auctions.
  • A $50 administrative fee will be added for each purchased vehicle which gives the buyer a notarized title to that vehicle
  • City employees and relatives of City employees are forbidden from purchasing any vehicles at the auction.
For more information, visit Brown's Auction Company's Web site at www.brownsauction.com

Lidia's Indian Spiced Cauliflower and Potatoes
As temperatures drop, warm up with these deep Indian flavors. Try purple or orange cauliflower to add an eye-catching element to the dish.
Ingredients
  • 1 head cauliflower (any color), cut into florets
  • 1 lb golden or red skin potatoes, cut into pieces (same size as florets)
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste (see notes)
  • 1 tsp (or to taste), chilli powder or cayenne
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp garam masala powder
  • 2-3 Tablespoons coconut oil (or high heat oil of your choice)
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp black mustard seeds
  • ½ stick cinnamon
  • 2 pods cardamom
  • 1-2 whole cloves
  • ⅓ cup water or vegetable broth
  • salt
Directions
Heat oil over medium heat and add fennel, cumin mustard, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves and fry for 3 minutes, until fragrant but not burnt.
Add chopped onions and ginger-garlic paste and saute until onion is translucent. Add tomatoes and chilli powder, turmeric, garam masala and cook until combined and fragrant and the tomato has softened. Add cauliflower and potatoes and combine. Add water or broth, bring to a simmer, cover and cook until potatoes and cauliflower are soft, adding more liquid if needed. If there is too much liquid at the end of cooking, reduce over medium high heat until desired consistency. Season with salt and chopped cilantro and serve with rice or dal.
Note: ginger-garlic paste is made from grinding equal parts garlic and ginger into a paste, it is used very often in Indian cooking as an aromatic flavoring base and can be kept in a container in the fridge for easy use.

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday.
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring , and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd.
The earlier program is geared for younger listeners. The evening session is open to children of all ages, but will target school-aged children. This program is free and sessions run about 45 minutes. "Tales on Tuesdays" is intended to introduce children to literature through storybooks, poetry, flannel boards, finger plays, and participatory activities.

    Tuesday, February 16, 6:00pm

Please join us when New York Times bestselling author of THE AVIATOR'S WIFE, Melanie Benjamin, presents and signs, THE SWANS OF FIFTH AVENUE, her triumphant new novel about New York's "Swans" of the 1950s-and the scandalous, headline-making, and enthralling friendship between literary legend Truman Capote and peerless socialite Babe Paley.

Of all the glamorous stars of New York high society, none blazes brighter than Babe Paley. Her flawless face regularly graces the pages of Vogue, and she is celebrated and adored for her ineffable style and exquisite taste, especially among her friends the alluring socialite Swans Slim Keith, C. Z. Guest, Gloria Guinness, and Pamela Churchill. By all appearances, Babe has it all: money, beauty, glamour, jewels, influential friends, a prestigious husband, and gorgeous homes. But beneath this elegantly composed exterior dwells a passionate woman a woman desperately longing for true love and connection.

Enter Truman Capote. This diminutive golden-haired genius with a larger-than-life personality explodes onto the scene, setting Babe and her circle of Swans aflutter. Through Babe, Truman gains an unlikely entree into the enviable lives of Manhattan's elite, along with unparalleled access to the scandal and gossip of Babe's powerful circle. Sure of the loyalty of the man she calls True Heart, Babe never imagines the destruction Truman will leave in his wake. But once a storyteller, always a storyteller even when the stories aren't his to tell.

Truman's fame is at its peak when such notable celebrities as Frank and Mia Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, and Rose Kennedy converge on his glittering Black and White Ball. But all too soon, he ll ignite a literary scandal whose repercussions echo through the years. The Swans of Fifth Avenue will seduce and startle you as it opens the door onto one of America's most sumptuous eras.

Sold Out! Champagne Education Series, Session 1:  "Champagne 101 v2.0", February 16, 6:30pm
    In our exciting series last year, Dr.Michael Knisley took us from basics to advanced in 4 sessions and I think it is safe to say that everyone who attended left with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the region, the wines and the producers. Well, all of us, especially Michael, had so much fun that we are ready to begin again with a new focus and, of course, new wines! In this second version of his basics class, you'll learn that Champagne is wine first and foremost.  But, it is also the most complex category out there.  Because of this, it is often misunderstood, overlooked, and "relegated" to celebratory occasions rather than being enjoyed on its own merits as a wine.  This overview of the basic styles of champagne will help you understand why this is such a special type of wine, make sense of the complexity of its production and styles, and appreciate why it shouldn't just be served for special occasions. $45 and reservations are required.  You can sign up for this class here, Champagne 101 v2.0;

Wednesday, February 17, 6-8pm - Southern French Wine Flight!  We'll take you on a tour of the Mediterranean coast of France with an intriguing and delicious flight of 4 wines from the Luberon, Provence, Minervois and Carcassone. $15, nor reservations required

Friday, February 19, 6-8pm - Antonio Molesini in the house!  Our favorite Italian wine guy will be in house pouring 4 new wines from Sicily!  This tasting is free and no reservations are required.

Saturday Happy Hour with Phil de Gruy and Emily Roberston, 4-6pm
Weather permitting, our friends Phil deGruy and Emily Robertson will be making another guest appearance at the shop Saturday, adding a little music to our popular happy hour. Get a glass of your favorite wine at half price and wander on out to our courtyard for some amazing guitar and vocals from two of our favorite local musicians. No cover charge but generous tips are greatly appreciated :)  Check our facebook page for any cancelations due to weather.

Northern Italy Flight & Honey Bee Catering, Wednesday, February 24th, 6-8pm

Linda Smith of Frederick Wildman Imports will be in the house tonight pouring a flight of northern Italian wines from Piemonte, Lombardia and the Veneto. We have chosen 4 gems that demonstrate the focus of her portfolio on artisanal family owned wineries that produce small quantities of high-quality wine.  And since Italian wine is always best experienced with food, David Phillips of Honeybee Catering will be in the house serving up 2 exciting dishes to pair with the wines. For the list of wines and/or to reserve your spot, go to Northern Italy.  Reservations are required, $20, limited to 25 spots.

    Feng Shui!

Wyming Sun Talks About the Ancient Chinese Practice

METAIRIE, LA - "Feng Shui for Health and Wealth," a presentation led by Tao arts practitioner Wyming Sun, will occur at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

Sun says that some workspaces make employees tired after an hour and a half -- hence the widespread custom of coffee breaks. "Other spaces exhilarate you and can sustain your energy for three, four, sometimes even five hours -- basically until you get hungry," he says. "Moreover, over thousands of years of conscientious observation and study, similar benefits have been shown to be achievable by increasingly subtle changes."

He also says that "if you are attended by a good physician and taking appropriate medicine and live next to a busy interstate and hear the noise of the traffic and smell the exhaust, you will get well slowly.  On the other hand, if you live near a park and you hear the birds and smell the flowers, you will get well quicker -- even with the same doctor and the same medicine."

Sun will discuss these concepts as well as the following.

    • If you need sleep, Feng Shui can help you put in high efficiency rest hours.
    • If you need to finish a project, Feng Shui can help you put in high efficiency hours at your desk or worktable.
    • If you need to increase your skills, Feng Shui can help you put in high efficiency practice hours.

Wyming Sun began learning Taoist arts from his father, a native Chinese, at age seven, in New Orleans. In 1992, he became an "indoor pupil" of a master from Taiwan (the fourth ranking master of the Blue Dragon Lineage, a union of masters from Taiwan that practice Feng Shui for Asian corporations). In nearly two decades of international travel and teaching, Sun has practiced on hundreds of residences, corporation headquarters, public buildings (including a cancer hospital in Vancouver), and businesses.

    Author Event!

Mary LaCoste Gives A Basic Primer on Local Traditions:

Death Embraced, New Orleans Tombs and Burial Customs

METAIRIE, LA - Mary LaCoste, author of a new book titled Death Embraced: New Orleans Tombs and Burial Customs, will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
This session is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

Lacoste asks readers to ponder issues that should not be avoided. Some may want to use it as a guide to visiting New Orleans graveyards . . . or as a guide to life. In this presentation, she will discuss the following historical points about decay, love and tradition.

    • New Orleans reverted to Spanish rule in the 1760s and the Spanish, not the French, began above ground burial in New Orleans prior to the Louisiana Purchase.
    • New Orleans historic cemeteries have both below ground and above ground burials. All of the graves in the old Jewish cemeteries at the end of Canal Street are below ground as are about half the graves in the St. Patrick cemeteries there.
    • For most coffins, wood is the material of choice.  Human bodies are 60 percent water and wooden coffins allow for evaporation and natural decomposition. It is natural decomposition that makes multiple burials work in a single tomb.

Mary LaCoste is a native of New Orleans with a successful retirement career as a tour guide and journalist. Over the years she has served as a teacher, principal and university instructor. Fascinated by the tomb owned by her husband's family and determined to set the record straight for visitors and her many grandchildren, she began the long process of seeking out information through personal inquiry and research sources. A volunteer with local preservation groups, she helps organize and give stained glass tours of local houses of worship. She holds a Doctor of Education degree from the University of New Orleans.

MAYOR LANDRIEU'S OFFICE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO HOST BUSINESS INFORMATION SESSIONS
NEW ORLEANS - On Wednesday, February 17, 2016, Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Office of Economic Development will kick off another series of Business Information Sessions designed to connect local entrepreneurs and business owners with useful tools and resources to grow their businesses.

"These quarterly sessions are key to helping our local business owners and entrepreneurs thrive in the City's growing entrepreneurial hub," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "When our businesses succeed, our economy strengthens, more residents gain jobs, and we grow the tax base that pays for essential City services."

These sessions allow interested entrepreneurs and business owners to learn more about business opportunities. One session will take place in each City Council district. All are open to the public, and individuals can attend any or all sessions.

District A Councilmember Susan G. Guidry said , "The Administration's Business Information Sessions recognize the City's thriving entrepreneurial spirit and provide excellent opportunities for our local businesses to grow and connect with our festival culture."

District B Councilmember LaToya Cantrell said , "These information sessions provide a win-win opportunity by helping our emerging entrepreneurs to expand and grow alongside our City's unique and wonderful festivals. I hope that this series will also further diversify the City's workforce through increasing participation in the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program among small, women-owned, minority-owned, and LGBT-owned local businesses."

District C Councilmember Nadine M. Ramsey said , "The festival season is an enjoyable and potentially profitable time for our residents.  I am encouraged by the administration providing the crucial information needed to facilitate access for all citizens to participate in the wonderful economic opportunities presented by the numerous festivals held in New Orleans."

District D Councilmember  Jared C. Brossett said, "In this period of great economic growth in the city of New Orleans, it is more important than ever that we take the initiative in expanding economic opportunity. These sessions are a perfect example of how municipal government can be proactive in making sure that all of our entrepreneurs have access to the same knowledge and information. Through a series of steps like these, our business leadership community becomes deeper and more diverse and our economy and our city thus become stronger."

District E Councilmember James A. Gray said, " New Orleans is famous for its festivals, and both locals and tourists spend a lot of money on food, art and entertainment. Anyone who bakes a great pie, paints, makes jewelry and more can create or grow a small business. The Mayor's business sessions are a terrific opportunity for anyone interested in working and making money on the festival circuit."

Grammy Award winning blues artist, producer, composer, and actor Chris Thomas King was born in 1962 and spent his childhood surrounded by music in his father's famed Baton Rouge blues club, Tabby's Blues Box. Influenced by the finest blues musicians, King began touring with artists such as Buddy Guy and B.B. King in his teens. In the early 1990's, King began to infuse his sound with hip-hop and electronic music, creating a rap/blues fusion, which offended blues purists. Frustrated with what he viewed as rejection from American blues fans, King relocated to Europe in 1993 where he wrote and produced a number of recordings including 21st Century Blues and My Pain Your Pleasure, which was lauded by European audiences.
King returned to New Orleans in 1996 and began to reenter the more traditional American market. In 2000 the Coen Brothers chose King to play the role of itinerant blues man Tommy Johnson in their film, O Brother Where Art Thou. The enormous success of the film helped put King back in the spotlight and resulted in the sale of millions of records, as well as numerous awards, including Album of the Year at both the Grammy Awards and Country Music Awards. Today King has sold more than 10 million records and has continued to pursue acting roles, appearing in the Oscar winning film Ray, the Wim Wenders film The Soul of a Man, and Kill Switch with Steven Seagal.

    Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

B.B. King's Blues Club Opens on Decatur Street
Featuring Memphis BBQ, classic New Orleans cuisine and local musicians daily in the heart of the French Quarter
New Orleans, LA  - B.B. King left a legacy in the heart of music fans across the globe and the restaurant
and blues club bearing his name will leave you wanting more. Only the second one to open since his death, it is a special
tribute to the late musician. Known for its great live music and Memphis BBQ,
B.B. King's Blues Club (1104 Decatur St.) will
host its Grand Opening in the heart of the French Quarter on February 18, 2016.
Tourists and locals alike will find B.B. King Blues Club to be a destination for good music and great food. The club will
feature their famous Memphis BBQ coupled with classic New Orleans dishes and an Oyster Bar. Enjoy the Memphis fare
including their Famous Dry Ribs, Smoked Prime Rib and Pulled Pork or try a New Orleans favorite such as Gumbo Ya Ya,
Shrimp and Grits or an Oyster Po Boy. Cornbread is a southern staple and B.B. King's is well loved for that reason. Guests
can wash all of that down with a drink from the copper-topped bar or one of B.B. King's classic cocktails or local craft beers.
B.B. King's Blues Club is proud to have New Orleans native, Syrena Johnson as their Executive Chef. Syrena is a local
talent that entered the program at Liberty Kitchen after Katrina displaced her family and found a mentor in Chef John Besh.
From there, Syrena won Besh's foundation's scholarship to the International Culinary Center in New York and after
graduation returned home to share her talents with New Orleans, and B.B. King's is all the better having her skills in the
    kitchen.
At B.B. King's live music will be played seven days a week. The B.B. King All-Star Band will entertain guests four nights a
week and local bands will play 3-4 nights a week. The music will begin even earlier at 11 AM on Sunday featuring a
Jazz/Blues brunch for people to enjoy.
"We have been looking for a location in New Orleans for a decade and are excited to bring our world famous BBQ and all
day entertainment to the heart of the French Quarter. We work to honor the music legacy of B.B. King and our All-Star band
will play everything from authentic blues, classic soul, rock & roll, and jazz for our guests. We want you to come enjoy the
food and stay for the music," said Tommy Peters, President of Beale Street Blues Company.
Tony Coleman, B.B. King's drummer for more than 30 years is the music director for the Club and ensures that the music is
a top-notch tribute to the late musician. New Orleans offers the opportunity to showcase music that B.B. King's hasn't had in
other locations, and employing local musicians is the only way to get it right. Coleman said "The opportunity to put music
together for a location in New Orleans is a dream come true. While touring, we were only able to be here for a night or two
so I am looking forward to being involved in the city's music scene for a long time."

Club has partnered with New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and will showcase music students regularly at the
club, giving them the opportunity to share their craft on stage and work with other talented artists to hone their skills.
B.B. King's Blues Club's gift to music lovers everywhere is their All-Star Band, the hand-selected house band complete with
a full horn section that will have guests dancing to music inspired by the King of Blues, the Queen of Motown and all their
favorite Blues, Soul, Jazz and Rock and Roll musicians.

    Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

    Sincerely,

    Frank Stansbury
