The official e-newsletter of St. Andrew's Episcopal School Alumni
February 2016

Dear Alumni Community,

Winter sure has arrived here on Postoak Road! Up to three feet of snow covered the campus, but the weather did not slow us down.

We have upcoming events in warmer climates (Los Angeles and San Francisco coming up - see below for details), an exciting Writer's Week featuring 7 Alumni speakers and continuing impressive progress on the Student Center.

Now that we're buried out, I encourage you to stop by campus and see all that is happening. We'd love to welcome you back to campus, reconnect with teachers and take you on a tour down memory lane.

Best,
Madeline Wallace O'Brien '05

Alumni Spotlight: Alex O'Flinn '99
Alex O'Flinn spent a great deal of time at St. Andrew's playing music with his buddy Will Rast ('99) which would eventually segue into an interest in film.  "I was  really interested in how music and image play off each other to create a heightened state of emotion that would not be present without both elements working together."  This interest led to a desire to know more about the filmmaking process and after graduating with an English degree from Kenyon College, he would go on to receive an M.F.A. in Film Production/Directing from UCLA.  After film school, Alex found himself gravitating to the editing side of the filmmaking process, working his way towards becoming a Film Editor.
As an Editor, Alex works in both Documentary and Fiction, having edited the Sundance hit "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night", the recent PBS Independent Lens film "Autism In Love", and the upcoming film "The Bad Batch" starring Keanu Reeves, Jim Carey and Suki Waterhouse.  In 2014 he was the recipient of the Sundance Institutes Sally Menke Memorial Editing Fellowship.   He loves the opportunity that editing gives him to work with story on such an intimate level, and thanks Mike Davila for introducing him to Sam Shepard (one of his all time favorites).  He and his wife, Shannon, currently live in Los Angeles and watch a lot of films.

CTTL Student Research Fellows Use Data to Prepare for Brain Awareness Week
Last Week, the CTTL's Student Res earch Fellows exchanged ideas (via Skype) with its partners who lead  Research Schools International . The students have been using the data collected last year from teachers, students, and parents as part of the study designed by Harvard Graduate School of Education faculty.

The Student Research Fellows met in their neuroanatomy, strategies, growth mindset, and neuromyth teams and presented their preliminary ideas for feedback from RSI faculty and Dr. Ian Kelleher, the Director of Research for the CTTL and coordinator of the fellows program.
Bokamoso visit concludes
From Stacy Kincaid, South Africa Exchange Coordinator:
What a full three weeks of laughter, dance, and deep cultural exchange for the St. Andrew's and Bokamoso communities!  From crazy dancing at the Family Heritage Night to frank discussions about justice with Upper School students, Bokamoso has again made its mark on our students.  The Bokamoso youth and chaperones would like to express their gratitude to St. Andrew's for the wide and beautiful welcome they received during their stay.  The youth leave feeling affirmed and inspired to take steps forward in their education and future lives.

Oral History Project 2016
St. Andrew's Juniors are seeking interviewees for their Oral History Project.

St. Andrew's students have documented first-hand accounts of such historical topics as the Civil Rights Movement, numerous wars and global conflicts, the pursuit of the American Dream, the Space Race and much, much more. These interviews offer a unique view of historical events through the eyes (and mouths) of those who live it. Past interviewees include Lloyd Emerson who was a tank gunner at the Battle of the Bulge, Leslie Wagner-Wilson, a survivor of the 1979 Jonestown Massacre, and John Carlos, winner of the 1968 Olympics 200-meter gold medal. If you, or someone you know, would like to be considered for an interview subject, please contact Glenn Whitman at [email protected].
