Our Students Show Off Their Talents
And Our Community Benefits From the Efforts
The K-Kids and Builders Clubs provided a night of entertainment last Friday as they showcased our intermediate school students' talents in the 13th Annual BIS Talent Show. The program, which was created as a way to serve our school and community as a family friendly activity in the winter, has become a favorite among students. Any student in the Intermediate School can share a talent they may have.

Along with providing entertainment and an opportunity for kids to learn how to perform in front of a crowd, the service organizations are also fulfilling their desire to help others. Members of K-Kids and Builders Club greet families, hand out programs and announce the acts in the show.

Admission to this event is a canned good item. These donations are subsequently delivered to the local food pantry, F.I.S.H., by the club members, who also help stock the shelves.

You can view a gallery of photos from the night here, and videos of some of our up-and-coming talent on our YouTube channel, here. Thanks to advisors Jenni Phillips, Becky Clegg and all the participating students for making this such a delightful event.
4th Graders Form Shapes to Study Earth & Space
Project Meets Ohio Science Standards
BIS fourth grade students of Miss Wood, Mr. Beck and Miss Gueth recently took their study of the Earth's surface to a new level.  Learning about how  landforms and bodies of water were created, the students were given the challenge to write about and create a 3D example representing one of
these.  Students studied the fact that the Earth's surface has specific characteristics that change through weathering, erosion and deposition. Students created salt dough at home and were excited to construct and paint their finished projects in the classroom. Finally, they gained a valuable experience by presenting their projects in front of their peers.

The opportunity to create a lifelike model was a hands-on experience that included researching and developing a written report, communication skills and time management.  These are all skills which will go beyond the 4th grade and will help these students as they finish high school, college, and take on life's challenges. You can go here to see a gallery of project pictures. You can also see a short video of several students explaining their projects on our YouTube channel.
Who is Fiona?
A Service Dog is At Brookville Schools
Has your child mentioned meeting Fiona at school? She is a light colored, sweet and loveable labrador/golden retriever. If so, you may have asked yourself, "Why is there a dog at school?" We have those answers for you.

Fiona is a service dog in training through 4 Paws for Ability in Xenia . She is a "foster dog" staying with Mrs. Wourms, the physical therapist from the Miami Valley Regional Center works with our students. Fiona currently helps Mrs. Wourms in some of the therapy she provides to our students. Fiona eventually hopes to be paired with a child or adult with special needs (medical alert (seizures/diabetes), hearing alert, autism, mobility assistance, behavior disruption, PTSD and/or social bridging).

While at Brookville, Fiona has assisted in therapy sessions with such things as walking with kids (this allows changing balance by holding a leash rather than the rail when walking up/down steps), practicing with ball skills (throwing or kicking a ball for Fiona to retrieve) and as a motivator to students to complete tasks within session and earn visit time with Fiona.  Although Fiona gets to "work" with our students involved in therapy, she has become well known to all students and loves to receive the hugs and love they give her. Fiona has been a wonderful addition to our therapy program.  We are happy that her involvement at Brookville Schools will assist her in the future as she trains to become a partner with a special person who needs her help.

Staff Spotlight
Mrs. Porter
We would like to introduce you to Mrs. Anna Porter, one of our BHS teachers. The Staff Spotlight is a regular feature in the Blue Connector and is designed to assist you in getting to know our teachers and staff. Please take a moment to learn a little bit about Mrs. Porter and what she does at Brookville Local Schools.

Where is your hometown?
Kettering, Ohio

Where do you live now?
I still live in Kettering, Ohio.

How many years of teaching experience do you have?
This is my first year of teaching, but I have experience through student teaching at Miamisburg High School!

How many years have you taught in Brookville?
This is my first year at Brookville.

What is your position in the school district?
I am a high school science teacher. I teach Physical Science (Freshmen), Chemistry (mostly Juniors) and Chemistry II (mostly Seniors).

Tell us about your family and hobbies outside of teaching?
Here's where it gets cheesy...I have an amazing husband who is a civilian employee at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, and also serves in the Air Force Reserves. I am very proud of him and his accomplishments. He has received training in D.C. for Airman Leadership School in order to become a Staff Sergeant. He, along with my parents and siblings, have been a great support system throughout my life and I am truly blessed.

What is your favorite thing about teaching in Brookville?
I love the kids here. They make me laugh, and I thoroughly enjoy interacting with them. The staff here is also so supportive; the teachers, the awesome secretaries, the counselors, and the administration.

How do you spend June and July?
My husband and I typically take a 2 week long vacation.  We try to go places that are close to National Parks so that we can go hike somewhere new and awe inspiring.

Go RED for Women
SADD Supports a Good Cause and Raises Awareness
S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) decided that for 2015-2016, their motto would be "Make the choice that you can be proud of". This long standing BHS club of approximately 30 members' motto has allowed the group to address many meaningful causes.  One such activity is participation in the American Heart Association's " Go Red for Women " campaign. This campaign is part of a movement to make women aware of heart health. Some of it is genetic, but a lot depends on decisions you make such as what foods you eat, items you drink, whether you exercise, etc. Participating in Go Red for Women also goes hand-in-hand with our staff wellness goal for February, which is all about heart health.

The decision to support Go Red for Women began a few years ago when heart disease personally affected co-advisor Mrs. Herbert. It was evident this was a worthy cause and the club wanted to raise awareness. They started small and in just a couple of years, SADD has brought this to a district wide forum.

All staff members were encouraged to wear Red on Friday, February 12, 2016. Donations could be made to wear jeans or tennis shoes ($5.00 per item), with all money going to the American Heart Association. This year, SADD raised over $470. Mrs. Herbert remembers walking into BHS last year and seeing our staff dressed in red, simply to support a great cause. This year, there are many more participants who are trying to make a difference. You can view a gallery of photos from this year here .

In yet another initiative,SADD will be gearing up for their biggest event, After Prom, which will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016. This club takes care of the activities and collecting the food and prizes which are generously donated by parents and businesses, all in an effort to provide a safe environment for our students.  To read a little more about the After Prom event, please read a previous article which you can find here .

If you are interested in more information regarding SADD, please contact Mrs. Herbert or Mr. Lamb at BHS.
