The City of Hamilton has suffered a tremendous loss this morning. It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the tragic loss of Firefighter Patrick Wolterman, who passed away early this morning after Hamilton Fire and EMS responded to a structure fire on Pater Avenue.

At approximately 1:12AM, Hamilton Fire and EMS responded to a structure fire at 1310 Pater Ave. in the City of Hamilton. There was heavy smoke visible upon arrival and firefighters were advised that there could be occupants inside the home. In an effort to locate and rescue possible occupants, firefighters made entry into the home. Upon entry, a "may day" of a firefighter down was announced. Without hesitation, HFD members rescued the firefighter and immediately performed CPR while transporting the firefighter to Fort Hamilton Hospital. Sadly, he passed away in the line of duty, serving the citizens of Hamilton.

There is no greater sacrifice than risking your life for someone else's and Firefighter Wolterman did just that. We cherish and respect those who are willing to put their lives on the line to protect us.

Donations for the family can be made to the Firefighter Wolterman Memorial Fund at First Financial Bank. Please keep Patrick's family and the members of the Hamilton Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Respectfully,

Joshua A. Smith
City Manager
