April 2015
In This Issue

Earth. What a beautiful planet. Every day, 52 weeks a year, the Earth continues to rotate, giving us the rising sun, our birthdays and all of our favorite holidays in between. April 22nd marks the annual celebration of all this land has provided us with. The fight for a clean environment continues with increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change manifest more everyday. We invite you to be a part of Earth Day and help the world write victories into history.

The Environmental Center knows just know much you love this planet and we have created a simple Earth Day guide to get you started giving this planet the respect it deserves.

Scientists warn us that climate change could accelerate beyond our control threatening our survival and everything we love. Join the largest climate petition to save the world and rapidly shift our economies to 100% clean energy by 2050 at http://www.earthday.org/ There are also other Acts of Green you can contribute to on this website. The Canopy Project plans to plant 10 millions trees in impoverished areas. For every $1 you contribute, they'll plant 1 tree.

10 Simple Steps to make a difference on Earth Day

  1. Vote for renewable energy: LPEA ballots come on 4/25. If you are interested in moving renewable energy forward in La Plata County, consider voting for your progressive candidates. Learn more at the LPEA Friendraiser on 4/23 at Open Shutter Gallery.
  2. Swap out your light bulbs. Why? Compact florescent light bulbs use less energy than regular light bulbs and last up to 10x longer.
  3. Plant a tree.. or 3! With Arbor Day on April 27th just around the corner from Earth Day, this is your chance to practice planting a fruit tree or any other kind of tree. Why? Trees remove CO2 from the air and help fight global warming. How? Check out your local nursery, they'll help you pick one out and give you planting advice!
  4. Turn off Lights and unplug all appliances. This couldn't be easier! Walk around your house, notice unnecessary lights that are on as well as cell phone chargers and appliances that are using electricity even though nothing is on.
  5. SAVE WATER!! Run washing machines and dishwashers only when they're full. Large loads=less water used. Take shorter showers by setting a timer. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
  6. Carry your own Water Bottle. Reduce the amount of plastic waste in the world by simply carrying your own.
  7. Care for your body. Only put on your skin ingredients that you'd be able to eat as well.
  8. Upcycle used jars into cups. Instead of taking all of your glass to the Recyling bins, wash them out and repurpose them into cups or use them for flower vases. .
  9. Shop at Durango Natural Foods and let the cashier know that you want to Round Up. Cumulatively, the pennies and cents you contribute over the next months will help the Environmental Center purchase a solar-powered fan for our on-campus greenhouse.
  10. Use Social Media to spread the word about the need to save our planet and challenge your friends to do the same. Show us how you celebrate #EarthDay and tag your #NatureAdventure as #FLCEarthDay2015. Send them to us and we will feature you on the Environmental Centers Facebook page!
