PBIS & Leader in Me

This month we will focus on Habit 7, Sharpen the Saw. We want the students to focus on taking care of themselves physically and mentally. Making sure they are eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep is important for their health. It's also important for students to make sure they are making time to spend time with friends and family. Another way to Sharpen the Saw is to find meaningful ways to help others. Nothing is more rewarding and makes you feel as good as helping someone that is in need.

We are very excited that our first Sweeny Student Leadership Council deployed this month. During their first meeting they synergized through a team builder and discussed upcoming projects that they could be a part of at Sweeny. The entire group was so positive and we cannot wait to see the positive impact of these fantastic leaders on our school community. They are pictured below.

A great place for resources that parents and families can utilize is the  Leader in Me website. You will find more information about the 7 Habits. (click here)

Ideas for Reading and Writing at Home
With so many cold days, it's a perfect time to have your child work on their reading and writing at home.

Writing
Writing is such an important skill and it's so much more than just putting words on paper.  It is a way your child can communicate their thoughts, ideas, and feelings.  You can help them develop as a writer by doing some fun and simple activities with her at home.

Reading
Your child learned to talk by listening to people talk to them. They heard words everywhere he went. Learning to read needs just as much exposure.  They need to be read to, need to see people in his family reading, and they need lots of opportunities to see letters and words everywhere.

Counselor's Corner
Presented by Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Gerwel

Happy February! This month the counseling department will be focusing our lessons on kindness and friendship. All 3rd-5th grade students will be taking their middle of the year Acuity tests from  February 8-19. If you have a student who is in the upper grades, please make sure they get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast so they are ready for those assessments!

February 1-5 is National School Counseling Week! In honor of that, your Sweeny counselors would like explain a little bit of what we do to help your learners. We provide a comprehensive school counseling program that is proactive and preventive in nature and supports students with academic development, career development and personal/social development. The Sweeny counselors implement this program through our guidance lessons, responsive services, student planning, and system support. On a regular basis, the Sweeny counselors deliver classroom lessons to all students that go over a variety of topics from career exploration to friendship to study skills. We provide responsive services through consulting with teachers, administrators and you, the parent. When a student is going through a difficult time at home or school, we provide individual and small group counseling. However, we do not provide clinical counseling. If you child needs that type of counseling, we provide you with referrals of therapists in the area. When a child needs to see the counselor, they can request to see us or their teacher or you can make those requests, too. The relationship we develop with your child is a confidential one. This means what is shared with us is only shared with others on a need to know basis.  We work to maintain the privacy of students and their families. When information needs to be shared, we will assess who needs to know and what information needs to be known to best help students and their families. This school counseling program is aligned with the American School Counselor Association(ASCA) National Model.

Special Teachers' News

Physical Education:
This month in Physical Education we have been working on demonstrating cooperation with partners and small groups to accomplish a game goal.  Students have used partner parachutes and the big class parachute to work on teamwork.  Students also played an invasion game called Get the Gold where they had to discuss and come up with different strategies to help their team be successful.  They had to listen to each others' ideas and try to find a way to incorporate each strategy.  This goes hand-in-hand with our Habit for the month: Synergize!  We know that working together is better.  We are also very excited to introduce our new student-teacher, Coach Prewitt, who will be here for the next few months!  He and Coach Wright will be synergizing to bring some exciting new activities to Physical Education.

Art:
*Fifth Grade Are doing a self portrait and a paper constructed Tower.
*Fourth Grade will be doing a Mandala and learning about Radial Balance.
*Third grade are focusing on collage and drawing a shoe and using magazines to fill in their shoe.
*Second grade are creating a crazy hair day self portrait.
*First grade finishing up their polar bears and starting a few president and national symbol lessons.
*Kindergarten finishing 2 more winter themes then Learning about Jasper Johns and creating a copy of his art.

Music:
We've had a fantastic month in the music room.  I'm very proud of our young musicians working so hard right when we came back from break!  Our younger students in Kindergarten and 1st grade have been working incredibly hard to really learn these new music words such as tempo, pitch and texture.
I am very proud of the 2nd grade for completing their Unit of Instruction on rhythm.  All three 2nd grade classes worked very hard to learn our new terms and instruments.  I will use our scores to guide my instruction on this subject through the remainder of the school year.

The upper level grades have been transferring notes and rhythms to the music staff this week.  We are really starting to get ready for recorders!  The 5th graders are really starting to get interested in their options for 6th grade choir and band.

Library:
The students started the month of January by writing about things they had done during winter break. They were authors and illustrators of a personal narrative piece. The second week of January, they reviewed the Show Me award nominees. Students in grades second through fifth chose one of the nominees and created a presentation about that book. Then the third and fourth week of library students presented their presentations and all students K-5, voted for their favorite Show Me nominee. On  February 1st  I will announce the book selected by Sweeny students. Then in late April, I will announce which book won across the entire state of Missouri. It is an exciting time in library!
