2016 CSE Scholarship Recipients Announced

This year, the CSE Membership Committee received 68 submissions for three scholarships to attend the annual meeting, all expenses paid. The quality of these submissions was the highest ever, making this a very difficult decision for the committee. After careful review, the committee narrowed its search down to three deserving individuals, all of whom are excited and passionate about increasing their knowledge and expertise in the scientific editing field. Congratulations to Rahul Arora, Kimberly Rhodes and Julie Vo, the 2016 Council of Science Editors scholarship recipients!

Rahul K. Arora, Managing Director, STEM Fellowship
Rahul Arora serves as the Managing Director of STEM Fellowship, coordinating the operations and growth of this Canadian non-profit. His work with STEM Fellowship aims to support inquisitive students in their scientific endeavors through community-building outreach, research internships and potential publication in the STEM Fellowship Journal. The STEM Fellowship Journal is a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary, and open-access journal, sponsored by Canadian Science Publishing. Through his work, Rahul hopes to broaden access to educational opportunities for students and instill within them a mindset of inquiry.

Kimberly Rhodes, Publication Administrative and Research Assistant, The American Society for Nutrition
After graduating from Juniata College, a small liberal arts school in central Pennsylvania, Kimberly moved to the Washington, DC area and started her career in international development at the World Bank. She soon discovered her passion for public health and nutrition and pursued an M.A. in Global Health from George Mason University. She subsequently transitioned to the American Society for Nutrition in 2014, where she works as part of an exceptional team that publishes 3 journals: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, The Journal of Nutrition, and Advances in Nutrition. One highlight of her role is that she gets to conduct research and analysis that informs the direction of their activities.  She enjoys running, swimming and travelling; her next trip will be to Portugal in the spring.

Julie Vo,
STEM CELLS Editorial Coordinator, AlphaMed Press
Julie is currently Editorial Coordinator for AlphaMed Press, a premier independent publisher with three internationally peer-reviewed journals: STEM CELLS; The Oncologist; and STEM CELLS Translational Medicine. She graduated from Colorado College with a BA in history on the pre-health track and a minor in Asian studies. She joined AlphaMed Press as Editorial Assistant for The Oncologist in 2014, processing submissions and corresponding with authors from around the globe. In 2015, as Editorial Coordinator, she started to oversee the pre-publication process for peer-reviewed manuscripts submitted to STEM CELLS, which includes coordinating line-ups, press releases, virtual issues, video highlights, and other production issues with the journal's co-publisher, Wiley.

The CSE Scholarship Program was developed to support editors and publishing professionals by sponsoring their attendance at the CSE annual meeting. The scholarship program will be open again in the fall of 2016. Please go to the CSE website for more details and to make a donation to support the scholarship program.
