UCSB's Engineering and Sciences is Top 10 AGAIN World Wide

UC Santa Barbara has once again placed among the top 10 in Leiden University's annual rankings of the 750 best major universities in the world, in terms of impact in the field of the technology. UCSB took the no. 7 spot overall.

Compiled by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands, the ranking is based on data from the Web of Science bibliographic database produced by Thomson Reuters. It includes the Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.

Impact is determined by several indicators, including the average number of citations of the publications of a university, and the proportion of publications that belong in the top 10 percent most frequently cited.

Did You Know that UCSB's College of Engineering is No. 1 in Research Funding?

UC Santa Barbara's College of Engineering is the no. 1 research-funded UC engineering program, per faculty, out of all of the UCs (UCOP Accountability Report) FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS.

What are some of the underpinnings of this funding success story?  UC Santa Barbara hosts an extensive number of interdisciplinary centers that are of key interest to industry.

Of these centers, the one that is funded entirely by industry, and has a dozen or more, mostly international partners, is the Solid State Lighting and Energy Electronics Center .  This one-of-a-kind center is sponsored by many of the world's corporate leaders in LEDs, lasers and power electronics.

But it isn't just centers that make UC Santa Barbara a success with industry.  About twenty percent of faculty at UC Santa Barbara have started a company, and some faculty members have started/been involved in over 5 companies.  In addition, many faculty have worked at companies before coming to the campus. This exposure to what it takes to make a commercial product and it has been a significant aspect of why companies continue to come to campus and  have productive relationships with our faculty.

To help expand relationships for all faculty, and to help more junior faculty gain them, the  Engineering and the Sciences at UC Santa Barbara maintains a Corporate Business Development Office.  The role of the office is to provide a portal for companies to explore prospective research partnerships, utilize world-class facilities and equipment, and to recruit top students.  If your company is interested in gaining more insight into your alignment with UC Santa Barbara, please contact us.

The university also provides one of the most comprehensive network of multi-use facilities and equipment for the use of academics, industry and government agencies. Plan Your Recruiting  Activities  NOW

Recruiting events are one of the best ways for students to explore jobs, gain industry knowledge and meet hiring decision makers. Fall is the busiest time for companies to host info sessions and tech talks on campus because it is when all of the top students are choosing their internships or full-time jobs for June. Last year Engineering and Sciences hosted over 70 companies for recruitment activities during a 6 week period.

Classes start Thursday, September 24th and the UCSB Fall Career Fair is set for Wednesday, October 14th. We already have a number of info sessions booked in October and dates are filling up.   If you would like your company to host an info session please contact Ashley Antoon, the Student Recruitment and Internship Manager for Engineering and the Sciences, at (805)893-5497 or [email protected]
