Holiday Cheer?

Every close of the year brings with it a sense of calm before the storm. For us in the tax preparation industry, we find ourselves juggling all of the normal demands for this season alongside
the very real urgency of preparing for our busiest time of the year. But I must say that I do love this time to prepare, to be still and to meditate upon the redemption possible from the darkest days.

So... yes, this is a tax newsletter, and we probably should discuss that little elephant in the room. Clearly, there are many things to discuss. As you are receiving this, there is still time to make some last- minute moves to reduce your tax bill for 2015. These are always smart, because aside from Roth contributions, there are not many things you can do after December 31 that can affect your tax bill. Ideas include: paying an additional mortgage payment, making EOY business investments (if you have a business), make special gifts to charities that you appreciate (about which I have more to say on the inside), and plenty more.

Holiday Joy Doesn't Have to Cost a Fortune

Regardless of your faith tradition, it's clear that there are some great stories and movies that come around this time of year. And one of the most interesting, in my opinion, is old the version of A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge. I confess that I understand Scrooge's character.

Ebenezer Scrooge -- a denizen of early Victorian London -- is a solitary and miserly businessman who spends his days keeping track in giant ledgers of all the money he doesn't spend, and his nights alone in a huge, drafty house he's too cheap to heat. He isn't in debt, lives well within his means, and makes shrewd investments. He is such a consistent and
understandable character; sometimes it seems like a tragedy that he changes in the end.

Prepare Now To Make Healthy Changes in 2016

Oh, the dreaded New Year Resolutions. Let's actually do something that will make some real change this year, shall we? Here are some ways to get ready...

* Write down your goals. fake them specific; make sure you can measure the goals. For instance, instead of "Lose
some weight," resolve to drop five pounds by June 30.

* Motivate yourself. Write down why you want to achieve the goal. List all the ways you will benefit from achieving it.

Pay Attention!

In the 19th century, when the telegraph was the fastest method of long-distance communication, a young man went to an office in New York City to apply for a job as a Morse code operator. Inside, he found
a busy office filled with the noise and clatter of employees, customers, and the clicking of a telegraph in a corner.

He joined seven other applicants for the job, all waiting to be summoned into the inner office for an interview.
