December 2015

Happy Holidays from ECO City Farms!

With the ending of 2015, we are also saying farewell to our Bladensburg Farm Manager, Colin Mahoney. We are sad that he'll be laving the ECO City Farms team and wish him all the best in his next ventures.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello friends and supporters of ECO,

Over the past 2+ years I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most
passionate and hard working people in the local food movement and on some very
exciting projects here at ECO City Farms. I've had the great pleasure of focusing most of
my efforts into expanding and growing the Bladensburg farm. At the end of the year I
will be leaving my position as Farm Manager of Bladensburg to hike the Appalachian  Trail. The Bladensburg farm will be left in good hands and will continue to produce  and expand.

Together with our farm in Edmonston, the Bladensburg farm has become  a real treasure in our area for education and access to local healthy food, nutrition,  composting and soil rebuilding, and the many other projects we aim to tackle at ECO  City Farms. However, what we do would not be possible without the reception and  support of community members like you, and for that I thank you.

This upcoming year,
like every year, ECO will be adding and expanding our programs, and working hard  with the community to reach our goals. As I move on to the next phase of my life I join  all of you as a fan and  supporter of ECO City farms, I am most  excited for the second  year of the Port Towns Farmers Market (stay tuned for more details) and when I come  back to buy all of the wonderful produce next summer, I hope to see you all there as  well.

Thanks again,
Colin Mahoney, Former Farm Manager -Bladensburg

  • We fed more than 1600 people from our Edmonston and Bladensburg farms, via our ECO Farm Share programs, and Riverdale Park Farmers Market, and Port Towns Farmers Market.

  • Our Seed2Feed summer program gave 27 local youth hands-on learning about farming and growing food, cooking and nutrition, food systems and food justice, along with arts activities.
  • We developed the SEEDlings summer program. 22 younger children ages 5-12 were engaged in farming, cooking and physical activity. Many of these children are involved with our after school program.
  • More than 400 people toured our farm and 27 people were trained as either interns or apprentices on our urban farms.

#FairFarms Campaign
ECO is joining a new movement of consumers, green businesses, visionary farmers, environmental and public health organizations, and eaters all over the state of Maryland to  invest in homegrown, healthy food and restore our waterways - through the #FairFarms campaign!

Together, we are building toward a day when farm practices restore the soil and support the health of our waterways, making them once again swimmable, drinkable, and fishable - and when every Marylander can enjoy healthy, delicious, affordable local food, grown responsibly.

You can take action and be part of the groundswell. Sign this Pledge.

We are aligning with Fair Farms to help build power in new ways, champion visionary farmers who are farming against the grain and encourage a shift to sustainable farm practices. We know that a committed group of people can make change happen in our great state.

Will you join us? To be a part of the movement for #FairFarms, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for campaign updates.

Food, water and public health have been disconnected in Maryland's public dialogue for too long. Let's build a powerful movement to heal our food system, our communities, and our ecosystem!
