House Update: December 2015
Michelle's Message

Hello,

It's been an exceptionally busy and exciting December here at the House! Our House is beautifully decorated for the holidays and brimming with the love and generosity of so many wonderful donors, volunteers and staff.

Being with family during the holidays is always a precious gift, but this year it means even more to the Austin family. Please take a moment to read their family's story. They are just one of the 58 families who are staying here at our House right now. And because of you, we are able to provide these families with comfort and care-and a little bit of holiday cheer-at a time when they need it the most.

We have been overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of donations to our House. From toys, books and clothes for our annual Santa's Workshop, to lovely home-cooked meals and freshly-baked cookies, we can't help but feel the spirit of togetherness and joy this time of year.

On behalf of everyone here at the House, thank you for giving the gift of togetherness to our families this holiday season.

With gratitude,
Michelle

A New Heart for Thanksgiving and a Home for Christmas

When Chris and Ashley Austin of Bedford, IN received the news that their son, Cohen, had been diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy - a rare disease of the heart that restricts the heart's ability to pump blood - they knew their lives would be forever changed. There would be frequent visits to doctors and specialists, extra measures would need to be taken to protect Cohen's immune system and at just four-years-old, Cohen would need a new heart.

The next few months would be a whirlwind. Cohen was placed on the transplant list on July 1, 2015 and on November 24, they finally got the call they'd been waiting for. "I will never forget when they told us that they had a heart for Cohen," says Ashley. "My husband Chris was at work, Cohen was playing, our older son was at school, our daughter was napping and I was on the treadmill."
