PLC Represents Veterans Displaced by Huntington Beach's Anti-Affordable Housing Actions
Kennedy Commission and Jones Day partner with PLC as Huntington Beach City Council blocks development of affordable housing in Beach-Edinger Corridor
On July 31, 2015, two formerly homeless veterans and the Kennedy Commission filed a petition to void the City of Huntington Beach's efforts to block affordable housing. The Petition for Alternative Writ of Mandate and Complaint for Declaratory and Injunctive Relief in Orange County Superior Court seeks to force Huntington Beach to implement its state-approved General Housing Plan Element. The petitioners are represented by PLC, the California Affordable Housing Law Project, and Jones Day.

As students head back to school and preparations begin for one last summer BBQ, PLC is reminded of some key events from the last three months.
PLC kicked off the summer with our annual
Volunteers for Justice Dinner
, which raised $725,000 for free civil legal aid for Orange County's poorest and most vulnerable residents. During the dinner, guests watched three touching videos of PLC's impact on the local community. One of the videos told the story of the Miracle Terrace, where low-income senior residents of the apartment complex were faced with choices such as paying their rent increases of 80 percent or buying much needed medication. PLC's Affordable Housing and Homelessness Prevention Unit helped turn this tragic tale into a true holiday miracle right before Thanksgiving last year.
Check out
PLC's YouTube page to see the other VFJ videos. For the first time ever, you can also hear from PLC leaders and the 2015 VFJ honorees on the
Lawyer Warrior Podcast, which was recorded live in Irvine during this year's dinner.
