Parents urged
to take survey

Carrollton City schools are participating in the Georgia Parent Survey program and need your help. The survey contains only 24 questions. You will be able to complete the survey using your personal computers, smartphones or iPads.

All survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for school climate analysis.

The survey will remain open through Friday, Feb. 26.

Thank you in advance for taking time out of your busy schedule to help us in this important school improvement effort.

SAT Word
of the Week

Each week Carrollton High School features an SAT "Word of the Week" to help students build their vocabulary in preparation of the test. Here's the latest:

Penitent
(pen-i-tuh nt)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: expressing remorse for one's misdeeds.

Here it is used in a sentence:  The defense lawyer warned his client that failure to show a penitent demeanor in the courtroom could prejudice the jury against him.

New fact about the SAT: Beginning in March of 2016, the Math Test will be divided into two portions: Math Test - No Calculator and Math Test - Calculator. So make sure you're honing up on those arithmetic and fraction skills!

This year's motto:

"The best way to predict the future is to create it."

JROTC Veterans Day
program big success

The Carrollton High School Air Force Junior ROTC program once again produced an exceptional tribute program for Veterans Day.

Cadets, under the leadership of JROTC instructors Maj. Sylvester Hendrix and Master Sgt. Marvin Cox, organized five separate programs to allow all Carrollton City Schools students to attend. Held in the CHS gym, the Carrollton Junior High School Band provided patriotic music for all five sessions and the CHS gospel choir, pictured above, performed at all ceremonies, too.

Thank you JROTC, for your dedication and commitment to honor all of our veterans in this exceptional way!

Loftin winner of 'Trojan Tune-In'  gift  certificate

Brian Loftin, one of 957 parents/community members who provided feedback in the second annual "Trojan Tune-In" district survey, is the winner of a $500 gift certificate to the Trojan Nation Store.

"We are extremely pleased with the response to the Trojan Tune-In," said Jay Goodman, director of Strategic Communication for Carrollton City Schools. "It is important for people who are invested in Carrollton City Schools to have an opportunity to share their thoughts on what we do well and how we can improve. Having almost 1,000 people take time to give us feedback helps us immeasurably."

Loftin and his wife Jean have two sons in the school system - Drake, a freshman at CHS, and Parker, a seventh grader at CJHS. Congratulations!
Trojan old donations

Donations can be dropped off during school hours to the front, attendance or vocational offices at CHS. Donations made by Nov. 20, 2015, will enter you in a drawing to win a $100 gift certificate to the Trojan Store! Anything TROJAN is acceptable for donation! This includes both clothing AND memorabilia.

BASS team earns state, national accolades

A Carrollton High School club many do not know about has produced exceptional results at the state and national levels and its successes have led to a more than doubled membership.

The CHS Trojans BASS Team, only two years old, placed fourth in state competition last month at Lake Hartwell. Taylor Cox, one of the team members, was the only female in the state to qualify for the tournament.

Georgia BASS Nation is the sanctioning organization for high school club team fishing and falls under the auspices of BASS Nation at the national level. Last summer, Taylor and fishing partner Ben Muse qualified for a national BASS tournament and placed 16th out of 105 competing teams.

Besides Taylor and Ben, other charter members of the club are Curtis Spinks, Carl Cook, Justin Camp and Tate Fricks. New club members are Clay Fontenot, Ross Kasselder, Cody Burson, Andy Smith, Noah Baker, Rhett Daniel, Sam Dudley and Gavin Grisham, more than doubling the team's membership.

Keep up with the club's accomplishments and upcoming tournaments on its Facebook page. And check out this video of the state tournament competition at Lake Hartwell.

Choral students do well at NATS auditions

Eight CHS students attended the Georgia NATS Chapter Student Auditions held at Georgia Southern Nov. 7. All scored very well in the audition process with two placing in their categories.

Sophomore Blair Lipham placed second in two auditions, Classical Division III-A and Musical Theatre Division I-2. Freshman Rachel Skinner placed third in Classical Division III-A.

CHS Choral Director Ms. Julie Lowry spoke with many of the college judges who were very impressed with the CHS student representatives.

"This competition gives our students a great deal of exposure and judges told me to please send our students their way when they start the college audition process,' she said. "All of our students are very excited about returning next year!"

NATS has been primarily a college competition, but in the past five years has begun opening the auditions up for high school students.

PLC CORNER
College tours provide important exposure to PLC students
Exposing students to a variety of post-secondary opportunities is one of the goals of the Performance Learning Center. On Nov. 5, students and staff visited Gordon State College in Barnesville, Ga. This was the first college campus visit for several of the students.

The tour began with a meeting with an admissions counselor who shared information regarding admission requirements, application deadlines and available scholarships. Although it rained, the students were still able to tour the campus, visiting several educational buildings where classes were in session, the student center and a dormitory. The tour ended with lunch in the dining hall where the staff served a variety of foods, including chocolate-covered ants. Because of this visit, several students have added Gordon State College to their lists of prospective schools to attend after graduation.

Students and staff, pictured above,  who toured Gordon State, are, front row, from left, Teiah North, Dalmis Rodriguez, Dallamit Rodriguez and Shakira Jamison. Second row: Mrs. T. Johnson (chaperone), Deshannelle Reid, Patria Bonner, Alea Phillips, Madelyn Smith, Kevin Hill, Norris Grimes, Stephen Wood, Fatima Hernandez, Anterious Ridley, Mrs. Terina Cousin.
