7 Habits of Highly Effective Fundraisersfundraiser
By Kelly Dunphy, Vice President, Fundraising and Development
In the run-up to the end of the year, with so many priorities and the  pressure  to meet your goals, it's tough to stay focused on the fundamentals of build ing donor relationships.  But these fundamentals are actually even more important at the end of the year for very good reasons:
  • 50% of non-profit organizations earn the majority of their total annual revenue between October and December.
  • 30% of all donations happen during December. And 10% happen from December 29-31.
Just in time for the giving season, here are our 7 Habits of Highly Effective Fundraisers.  Print it out and stick it to your bulletin board.  And if you need help, give us a call at (202) 338-6100 or email us at [email protected].

1.       Prioritize. With little time and few resources to spare, follow the 80/20 rule: spend most of your time focused on the donors or fundraising activities that will bring the biggest return.

2.       Know your donors' giving history. Which donors always give at the end of the year? Which donors have usually given their annual gift by now but haven't yet?  Do you have a  donor who was giving $10,000 five years ago and is now giving $1,000?  Now is a good time to get in touch with them to find out why.

3.       Pick up the phone. Get in touch with your donors quickly and directly to help build your relationship in a way that e-mail or letters cannot.

4.       Rekindle old relationships. Are there loyal supporters who have fallen off the radar?  Now is a great time to reconnect and bring them back into the fold.

5.       Thank your donors for their support this year, and in past years.  Top tier donors will appreciate receiving a call from your Executive Director or a Program Director.  It shows a personal interest in them and presents an opportunity to engage them in next year's priorities and programs.

6.       Invite them in. Donors who have visited your program sites and met those you serve are significantly more likely to give, and give bigger gifts.  Show them how their gifts make a difference!

7.       Enlist your Board. Willing board members are wonderful advocates for your organization.  Even better if they have a personal connection to one or several donors.  But don't assume they know what to do.  A one hour training brown bag can make all the difference in how effective they are in soliciting major gifts.

That's it - seven simple habits you can adopt and adapt to help maximize year-end giving.  And of course, OAI is always there if you need help.  Call us on (202) 338-6100 or send an email to your regular OAI contact or [email protected].  Happy Holidays!

Meet Fred Regan fred
OAI's Newest Campaign Manager and Senior Consultant

Fred Regan joined Orr Associates, Inc. (OAI) last month as Campaign Manager and Senior Consultant to further strengthen OAI's strategy, planning and campaign management ranks.  Fred's top client priority is to serve as Campaign Director for The Sal vation Army as it prepare s for a $200 million campaign in support of the innovative national-scale Pathway of Hope program.

Fred has spent more than 30  years, both in-house and as a consultant, working with a wide variety of nonprofits primarily in healthcare, education and conservation.  We asked Fred what attracted him to OAI, and how he plans to use his experience to help OAI's clients.

Fred Regan:

Why did I join OAI?  Because it offers me the best of both worlds.  I get the opportunity to work with a talented team with a broad array of capabilities.  I'm really impressed with OAI's capacity to help nonprofits across all of their development needs, from strategy and planning to annual fundraising, events and major giving.  As a sole practitioner, I wasn't able to offer that kind of "one-stop shopping".

I looked at joining one of the "big name" consultancies.  But I decided to go with OAI because I could see that the firm really works at building hands-on relationships - and clients appreciate that and benefit from it.  OAI is nimble, flexible, entrepreneurial.  I like the fact that Steve and Carol Orr have built this business from the ground up, and they're passionate about what they do.  I get the opportunity to work with smart consultants whose work I respect.  And I can take advantage of marketing, systems and infrastructure support that I only dreamed about when I was working from my home office in Westchester county!

The other thing that really appealed to me about OAI is the firm's outsourced development model.  My own experience has taught me that nonprofits are finding it harder and harder to attract and retain staff in key development functions.  OAI has carved out a niche helping clients bridge the gap while they search for their new Director of Development, Major Gifts Officer, or other front line staff.  And in a number of cases, clients have decided that outsourcing  is working so well, they won't even bother with the hassle of hiring in-house.  OAI has several long-term clients for whom we handle their whole development function.  This fills a real need for nonprofits today.

I'm here to help OAI build on and expand from its traditional client base - social and community services, education and healthcare.  I feel I can be most effective working right alongside a client's in-house team on a daily basis as a true partner, as I am with the Salvation Army.  OAI is not the kind of firm that swoops in, interviews a few people and then presents a lengthy report that just ends up gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.  Our consultants are in there day after day, solving problems, adding real value.  That's the kind of firm I want to be a part of.
