Year Round

We've had a great start to the Farmers Market Season so far! Our asparagus is loving the warm sunny days, so harvest has picked up.  Hopefully for those of you who missed the asparagus last weekend will get your share this week, but it always helps to shop early at market!

We're featuring our first Pop's Perspective of the season about Apricots, so be sure to check it out the video.

We'll see you at Market!

Welcome Back Fairfax!!

Adding to the weekend market mix:  Fairfax - we're looking forward to a great market season with you!

Opening Saturday - May 9

Opening Next Weekend - May 16

We had a great opening day for our OakMarr and Wakefield Farmers Markets on Wednesday.  It was nice seeing so many familiar faces.

What's Flying Off the Shelf?
It's always fun coming back from a weekend full of markets and comparing notes.  What questions did customers have? What product was the best seller?  Any interesting stories from customers?  Etcetera.  Etcetera.

Last weekend, the Fuji were flying off the shelf at market.

"Why?" might you ask.

Simple answer:  Because the Fuji taste awesome!

But seriously....why would the Fuji (or any apple for that matter) taste better than they did last fall when they were freshly picked right off the tree?

Over the past 6 months, the apples have been sitting in our cold storage facility in wooden bins.  We keep our storage super cold (ranging between 32 and 34 degrees Fahrenheit) with a high humidity level.  The high humidity is critical to keep the apples from shriveling.  And the super cold temperatures slow down the maturation process.

Just like good wines and cheese, the apple's flavor profile changes over time.  The starches in the apple have converted to sugars resulting in a different flavor than what you experienced in the fall.

The Fuji have gotten sweeter.  The GoldRush still have a nice tang, but have mellowed and sweetened significantly.  The Pink Lady still have a nice sharp flavor, but again, have sweetened.  Even the Granny Smith have a sweet nostalgic flavor.

My point is:  try each one of the apple samples at market. Something that you might not have been crazy about in the fall, may be your new favorite springtime apple!

Pop's Perspective:
Our Apricot Crop

We are pretty excited right now, because at the moment, it looks like we are going to have a nice crop of Apricots.

Apricots can be a hit-and-miss crop because they are the first tree fruit to bloom.  Because of their early bloom, they are more sensitive to springtime cold snaps.

At the end, Dave also talks about our Strawberry crop and when we might be harvesting.

Frequently Asked Question:
When will you have Strawberries?

Does anyone else feel like we are coming out of hibernation?  Spring is finally here.  The Farmers Markets are open.  And we are all craving fresh fruits and veggies!

Where we are now.
One of the most frequently asked questions at market last weekend was "When will you have Strawberries?"

It typically takes 30 days from bloom to har vest.  Our production time might speed up a bit since we are averaging higher temperatures than normal.
Where we will be by the end of May/early June.

In a typical season, we usually have Strawberries at market by Memorial Day. However, Memorial Day is early this year: May 25th.

So don't put your name down for a Strawberry Pie for your Memorial Day picnic. Plan on seeing a good quantity of Strawberries towards the end of May/early June.
We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
