August/September 2015
A New semester, a new beginning!
Welcome to a new semester!! We hope everyone had a safe, fun and relaxing summer. We would like to especially welcome our first year students and those who have transferred to us from another institution - we hope you can call Sage home.

During the summer, The Sage Colleges decided to implement a new safety tool for our students. We are excited to announce that we are now using the Piece of Mind (POM) emergency communication device to every full-time undergraduate student . The POM is a pocket-sized, one button device that can be pressed at any time for emergency help. The speakerphone allows you to talk with public safety dispatchers and officers immediately without the time and hassle of dialing a phone.

All full-time students (residents and commuters) should have received your device at orientation; if, however, you did not receive one, you can pick one up at the Student Life Office (Kahl Campus Center, suite 145) on the Albany campus or in the Residence Life Office (McKinstry building) on the Troy campus.

Anyone who is NOT a full-time student who wishes to purchase a device can contact the Sage Bookstore for more information. This includes part-time day students, graduate students, and Sage Employees.

To BE. To KNOW. To DO.

Dayle Carhart, Mirka Soler and Khidr Joseph, three Sage College of Albany students, embodied the spirit of the College's mission this summer. They took the opportunity to travel to Africa to learn about a new culture and to serve others. Mirka and Khidr spent two months in Uganda, while Dayle spent her time in Ghana.

Dayle was so moved by her experience, she shared the following:

"This summer, I had the life changing experience to travel to Ghana, in the Cape Coast area, through Operation Crossroads Africa for 2 months. I stayed in a village called Esuekyir, and worked at a local school, FEDEP (Foundation for Economic Development and Educational Promotion). In the mornings the group did construction, we mixed concrete and made bricks so that they could build more classrooms, and we also helped carry bricks, dirt, and rocks, to the upper level of the school which they used to make a volleyball court, and a drainage system. In the afternoon we assisted teaching in the classrooms, I worked in one of the first grade classes- which had 59 students. At the end of the school day I would have kids waiting to walk home with me, they would hold my hands and walk beside me the entire time. I cannot wait for the opportunity to travel back, to work at the school again, see my friends, and visit the place I can now call home."
