2015 Child Care Market Rate Survey is Complete!

We are pleased to announce that the 2015 Child Care Market Rate Study was successfully completed. A 65% response rate by provider type (center, family child care, and group family child care) and region was achieved!

The Las Vegas Urban League and The Children's Cabinet would like to thank all Child Care Providers who participated in this very important survey.

All rates have been shared with the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services who will use these rates to set the state's Subsidy Reimbursement Rate for the Child Care Subsidy Program. The new average cost of care table can be found on The Children's Cabinet's website by  clicking here
Car Seat Safety during Wintertime

In wintertime it seems only natural to have your child snuggled up in their coat as you strap them into their car seat. But dramatic crash test videos show why this practice should be avoided.

Fetal Health and Development
A normal pregnancy lasts nine months. Each three-month period of pregnancy is called a trimester. During each trimester, the fetus grows and develops.

There are specific prenatal tests to monitor the health of both mother and fetus during each trimester. With modern technology, health professionals can detect birth effects, identify problems that may affect childbirth, and correct some kinds of fetal problems before the baby is born. 2. Language and Literacy
3. Math
4. Physical Development and Health

Reading Storybooks to Dual Language Learners
One reason storybook reading is important for the dual language learner is that is promotes vocabulary development.

Vocabulary development in English requires both incidental learning and direct teaching of words. Teachers can use storybook reading to combine direct teaching of new words with the use of the same words while reading an engaging story aloud. Children who listen to stories in their own language can learn new words through active participation, such as answering questions related to the story. Reading aloud to young dual language learners needs to be done in a way that allows children to join in even if they are in the early stages of learning English.

The State of Nevada's Children: Zero to Three
State Baby Facts: A look at infants, toddlers, and their families in 2015

Typically, discussions of education policy surround access to high quality preschool, testing in K-12, or college affordability. Meanwhile, the experiences of our state's infant and toddlers are often pushed aside. All babies need good health, stable families, and positive early experiences to lay the foundation for positive long-term academic and social outcomes. Psst! Hey! Yeah, You... After-School Provider...
Out of School Time Workshops Just for You!

We know that folks like you who work with school-aged youth (ages 5-13) in after-school programs are not mandated to take part in Out of School Time (OST) trainings. And let's face it, the costs alone of taking some of these trainings can really add up. But, we have something that we want to share with you - something that can make your lives a little bit easier, not to mention keeping your wallet a bit heavier, too! You see, The Children's Cabinet has some really great workshops that we can offer you. And what's more, we can bring them directly to your facility (based on trainer availability). Plus, we offer follow-up technical support (some we can offer onsite!). Oh, did we happen to mention that all of this is at no cost to you? Yes, you are reading this correctly!

You can make a real difference in a child's success, both in school, and in their life. We have some wonderful curriculum and the practical experience to show you how. For more information about the OST workshops we currently offer, contact the following numbers below:
