Steven Radelet on his stimulating new book
The Great Surge:The Ascent of the Developing World

Radelet is the
Donald F. McHenry Chair in Global Human Development at Georgetown University and
Non-Resident Senior Fellow at Brookings Institution. His new book discusses progress in reducing poverty, improving health, increasing incomes, expanding health, reducing conflict, and encouraging democracy within the past two decades.
The Great Surge tells the story of this unprecedented progress and discusses
why it happened, and what it may portend for the future.

The WASH Symposium is an annual student-run event designed to provide a platform for sharing and expanding knowledge in the field of water, sanitation, and hygiene in the context of development. The symposium brings together leaders and WASH practitioners in social enterprises, the private sector, NGOs, academia, and development agencies. The event includes many speakers and panel discussions on relevant topics. Registration

Check out the Environmental Design Lecture Series. Many speakers have topics relevant to development. The next lecture is Tuline Gulgonen on Monday, January 25. Tuline is a researcher in child studies and a consultant on child's rights and will be sharing her work on children's agency and citizenship and methodologies to research with children and include them in decision making processes. REDR Relief Worker Training

EWB-USA has partnered with the Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief (
REDR UK) to offer a one day workshop titled "So You Think You Want to be a Relief Worker?"
You will be introduced to what a career in the humanitarian sector might look like. You will hear first hand experiences from individuals who have been involved in humanitarianism, learn about the nature of humanitarian relief, and discuss if an assignment in the humanitarian sector might be right for you. The workshop will provide resources on how to find humanitarian assignments and answer questions such as: How much does an assignment pay? How long are typical assignments? How much experience do I need to be an attractive candidate? Where do I start? Click here to register.

Research Fellow in Rural Water Supply
Location: Cranfield University & Kenya
Start Date: April 1, 2016
Length: 12 month
Cranfield University is looking for someone who is passionate about improving water supply to the 748 million people who still do not have access to an improved source of drinking water. The research will focus on sand dams, impermeable concrete structures constructed across seasonal rivers. These structures trap both water and sediment behind them, in effect creating an aquifer. Your research into the quality of water they produce for nearby communities will improve the scientific understanding of sand dams and provide aid donors with the confidence to invest in this low cost technology. The Mortens
on Center provides travel grants to students who are prese
