Prepare Your Fleet For Winter

With winter quickly approaching, it is important to prepare your fleets for colder temperatures. Below are some tips about how to winterize your fleet. Think ahead. While we don't want it to happen, mechanical problems do occur. In the winter months, it is especially important to make sure that there are emergency kits in each vehicle. These kits should include a blanket, food, and warm clothing to help the driver stay warm if he/she ever gets stuck in a vehicle and has to wait for help to come.

Get proper tires. Winter tires are different from the tires that would normally be used in warmer months because winter tires are made from different material that is designed not to harden as much at lower temperatures. Winter tires also have wider grooves, which can improve stopping distance. Think about putting tires that are built for colder weather on your vehicles.

Protect the exterior of your vehicles. Consider deep washing and waxing your fleet as a way to possibly protect it against the elements this winter. Harsh temperatures can be hard on vehicles, and this is one prevention technique that may prevent long-term body damage.

Silent Killer: Carbon Monoxide Hazard Bigger This Time of Year

Don't fall prey to this toxic gas. CO usually originates from fuel-burning equipment operated in an enclosed area. Protecting yourself from this gas is a tricky business. Not only is it colorless, it is also odorless and hard to detect. Take it from carbon monoxide victims themselves who weren't able to save themselves or call for help just because they did not know what serious hazards they were exposed to. The following are general tips on preventing carbon monoxide poisoning or minimizing exposure to this gas at the workplace:
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector with an audible and visual warning alarm at least 15 feet away from gas-powered equipment.
  • Do not install CO detectors near fans, swamp coolers or other sources of fresh or cool air as they can keep it from making accurate readings.
  • Regularly maintain and test carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Inspect ventilation and heating systems regularly, especially before and during cold or hot weather.
  • Prohibit workers from operating fuel-powered equipment, engines or tools in poorly ventilated areas. Click here to learn more.
