The UAB CCTS is proud to announce we are accepting nominations for the ACTS 2016 Translational Science Awards. The Translational Science 2016 Awards Committee is recognizes investigators and educators who have made outstanding contributions in the field of translational science. Awards will be made during the 6th annual Translational Science 2016 Meeting, to be held April 13-15, 2016 in Washington, DC.
The Awards Committee, made up of representatives from the partnering organizations, will select the awardees who will be notified in early January 2016. Additionally, nominators and awardee institution media representatives will be notified of the honor. There are four types of awards:
Edward H. Ahrens, Jr. Distinguished Investigator Award
Named in honor of Edward H. (Pete) Ahrens, Jr., founding member of the Association for Patient-Oriented Research, this award recognizes senior investigators whose innovative research has had a major impact on clinical practice and health care for the benefit of the public.
Clinical and Translational Research Distinguished Educator Award
This award recognizes an investigator who has distinguished him or herself as a researcher, mentor and academic leader. Students and trainees are also invited to submit nominations.
Translational Science New Investigator Award
This award recognizes an investigator's pathway to excellence in achieving an independent research career in biomedical research. The recipient will be required to present his/her research at the AFMR Henry Christian Dinner.
Team Science Award
This award recognizes the importance of interdisciplinary teams to the translation of research discoveries into clinical applications and eventually widespread clinical practice. Proactive interaction between academic and industry researchers is particularly crucial to continue progress and accelerate drug development.
Please note that ALL applications will be submitted by the CCTS office.

UAB One-Day Metabolomics Workshop
7:45am-2:30pm
Finley Conference Center, Kaul Genetics Building
Sponsored by the CCTS
Metabolites are not simply sources of energy to drive enzymatic reactions,
but are also the building blocks of the small molecule regulators, e.g., steroid hormones,
and all the macromolecules in a cell (including DNA, RNA, proteins, lipids and complex
carbohydrates). They are also regulators of gene and protein methylation/demethylation
processes.
This free, one-day workshop on Wednesday, December 2 in the Finley Conference Center
sponsored by the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, will introduce
metabolomics to biomedical investigators. Training will be given in the design of a
metabolomics experiment, the need for sample extraction,
the analytical platforms, data pre-processing and statistical analysis,
metabolite
identification and pathway analysis as well as application of metabolomics
t
o a complex system.

"
Enhancing Reproducibility in NIH & AHRQ Applications"
4:45-6pm
PCAMS, 1924 7th Avenue South
Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres served
Join the UAB CCTS on Wednesday, December 2, as we review the recent changes announced by the NIH expectations related to reproducibility, rigor, and transparency in grant applications, progress reports, and and peer review. These will affect anyone submitting a grant to the NIH or AHRQ. We will review the changes in detail so you'll be well prepared for your next application.
SAVE THE DATE
Save the Date for Rare Disease Day at NIH
NIH will host its next
Rare Disease Day on Feb. 29, 2016. The event aims to raise awareness about rare diseases, the patients they affect and the research collaborations that are addressing rare disease challenges. Sponsored by NCATS and the NIH Clinical Center, the event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Masur Auditorium in Building 10 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The day will feature tours, posters and exhibits, and presentations. NCATS will provide more information as it becomes available.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
NCATS Accepting Collaborative Proposals for Pre-Clinical Programs
The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is now accepting proposals to collaborate with its Bridging Interventional Development Gaps (BrIDGs) and Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) program scientists. BrIDGs scientists collaborate with researchers to advance candidate therapeutics for both common and rare diseases into clinical testing. TRND researchers and their collaborators move new therapeutic candidates through pre-clinical testing, from lead optimization to submission of an investigational new drug application.
