President's message

Dear SEMS Members,

In the United States and abroad, 2016 will ramp up to be an eventful year full of elections, and SEMS is included in the action. The lifeblood of our Society stays vibrant when our members serve and volunteer in various ways. One of the most significant ways of serving the Society is through our Board of Directors and Officer positions (President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past President).

Ballots were emailed to SEMS members on January 13.  If you did not receive a ballot, please contact Elaine Schwartz

We know that you are all passionate about IIE and SEMS, remember that it takes all voices to make a strong chorus and we want to make sure yours is included in the harmony! We encourage you to "Get Out The Vote!"

Suzanna Long, SEMS President
Charlene Yauch, SEMS President-elect
Wiljeana Jackson Glover, SEMS Immediate Past President

SEMS Says | Leading across borders

Engineering managers often have to work with colleagues, projects and operations that cross borders, assigning people to lead engineering teams that are part of multinational firms or state-sponsored organizations, including multilateral political treaty organizations.

In the Caribbean, there are four dominant European languages: English, Spanish, French and Dutch, along with Creole variants in each country and indigenous languages from the aboriginal communities. Each language is tied to different cultures in each of the islands. So when projects cross borders, you have to consider the cultural dimensions. Leading a team can become more difficult and have diplomatic implications for the engineering leadership.  Read more.

If you're an experienced engineer who is taking on increased management and leadership roles in your organization, consider the University  of Wisconsin-Madison's Master of Engineering: Engineering Management program, which is top-ranked by U.S. News & Report. In just two years, this highly selective program will improve  your ability to lead engineering projects and teams, communicate as a leader, and make better business decisions. With more than 60 percent of students obtaining a promotion or salary increase before graduation, and 95 percent reporting an "extensively positive" impact on their careers, you must find out more. SEMS Says | Tuning supply chains in Brazil

Since the late 1990s, competitiveness has been a major barrier to Brazil's growth. Problems include the low level of workforce qualification and integration of supply chains, high government taxes and expensive transportation. Since the early 2000s, the Brazilian government has targeted these problems with several initiatives - three that affect the work of engineering managers in specific industries.
The first is the formal establishment of "Local Production Arrangements," clusters that help integrate organizations that are part of the same supply chain. The idea is to take numerous small organizations that are dedicated to the same activity or that provide support for these activities and organize them in a geographic cluster. Read more.

Practitioner's Perspective | Looking for industry partners to conduct research on the Planning Process for Developing Complex Products

A multi-university research group is working on a research proposal on advanced planning methods for developing complex products that result from integrating physical, smart, software, and connectivity components. While it is well known that project management, in particular project planning, is a critical factor in the success or failure of product development projects, the changing nature of products is forcing companies to rethink the way they develop their products. When it comes to developing smart products, "traditional" project management tools and techniques are far from accruing the theoretical and expected benefits.  Read more.

Time for the professional roundtable | IIE Annual Conference and Expo

The arrival of the New Year signals that it is time for you to start making plans to attend the 2016 IIE Annual Conference and Expo. This conference will be held from May 21 - 24 at the Disneyland Resort Hotel, Anaheim, California, USA. Each year, the IIE Annual Conference and Expo plays host to two concurrent conferences: the Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC) and the Applied Solutions Conference (ASC). SEMS sponsors Engineering Management tracks in both the ISERC and the Applied Solutions Conference. Preparations are well underway to again make the Engineering Management tracks among the best at the conference.

The ISERC and ASC provide many learning and networking business_people3.jpg opportunities for SEMS members and anyone interested in engineering management topics. The Engineering Management Track at ISERC and ASC are always two of the largest, best attended tracks at the conference. The Track Co-Chairs are working with presenters from all over the world to ensure the highest quality conference.

In addition to the Engineering Management Tracks, the annual conference will feature the SEMS Town Hall and many student activities. The Town Hall is an interactive forum to benefit current and potential SEMS members. The SEMS officers and Board discuss the state of the society and future plans. The SEMS Town Hall is always well attended and is a great opportunity to learn about SEMS and network with your colleagues.

The student activities include presentations geared to students, networking opportunities, and a Student Best Paper Competition

Make your plans today to join your SEMS colleagues at the 2016 annual ISERC and Applied Solutions Conference! Early registration discounts are available through April 8, 2016. Visit the the Annual Conference  webpage  for more details. See you in Anaheim !
