OTC Curriculum

The Van Buren Community SAFE Coalition along with the Van Buren County Hospital and Thomas Pharmacy are providing education to all 5th and 6th grade students at the Van Buren Elementary on the dangers of prescription and over the counter medications.

Through a partnership with Scholastic, CADCA and McNeil the SAFE Coalition was able to receive the materials and curriculum to train all 5th and 6th grade students in the district. This curriculum has four 30 minute lessons to engage the students in discussions about the dangers of prescription medications.

Lesson 1- All About Medicine

Lesson 2- Reading and Understanding the Drug Facts Label

Lesson 3- Medicine Measuring Tools and Storage

Lesson 4- Medicines and Misuse

Each lesson is online, interactive and encourages the students to get involved in the activities. The lessons will be taught by their classroom teachers as well as members of the community. Larry Thomas- pharmacist at Thomas Pharmacy, Dr. Tim Blair with Van Buren County Hospital and Heidi Bainnbridge with the Van Buren County SAFE Coalition will all be guest presenters.

Students will receive take-home information to share with their families about the information that they learn during each lesson.

The SAFE Coalition is concerned about the rising numbers of prescription  and OTC drug abuse in the nation and wants to ensure that students in the local districts are being educated on the dangers of prescription and over the counter medications.

For more information on the curriculum or about the SAFE Coalition please contact the Van Buren County SAFE Coalition at 319-293-6412 or email at info@vbsafecoalition.com or check out the website at www.vbsafecoalition.com or on Facebook.

Iowa Partnership For Success Funds
The IPFS (Iowa Partnership For Success) Grant began in February. The contract has been finalized and signed off by both parties. Year one of the grant is focused on community assessment and capacity building. The team received the deliverables for the assesment portion of the project this month. By June 30th a Community Assessment Workbook and Tri-Ethic Community Readiness Survey need to be completed. Staff have already started work on this and will engage the coalition at the May meeting.

The Tri-Ethnic Community Readiness Survey requires the coalition to complete 12 interviews with members of the community to gauge their readiness to address the issue of underage drinking. Staff will be looking for volunteers to conduct these interviews as they would like for them to not be completed by the project coordinator. If you are interested in assisting with these interviews please contact the coalition office.

Both Kris Rankin, project coordinator and Heidi Bainbridge, Project Supervisor, will be attending a required training on May 12th and 13th along with coalition member Lydia Heald. Lydia will be serving in a young adult role to help the coalition better understand the 18-20 year old target population.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the SAFE Coalition, Iowa Department of Public Health and SIEDA Substance Abuse Agency to ensure that all parties were aware of the requirements of the funding and would work together throughout the duration of the project.

There will be one slight budget revision made for this project, we were notified that the NPN conference that is budgeted will not occur until next fiscal year so $2,395 dollars will need to be moved from travel to community focus groups to help gather more assessment data about the community. A copy of the final budget, including projections for year two have been included in the board packet for your review.

For more information on the Partnership for Success funds you may contact the coalition office at 319-293-6412 or via email at info@vbsafecoalition.com.
