Special Delivery! CMSRU M1 Student, Bethany Canver, Gives Birth

On April 30th, at 10:49am, M1 student Bethany Canver gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Weighing in at 7lbs, 1oz and 20 inches in length, this bundle of joy has quite the unique name- Rowan!

Little Rowan is the first baby to be born to any medical student while attending CMSRU. We had to find out the story behind Rowan's unique name, and it truly has such wonderful meaning.

"We found out we were pregnant the week of my orientation," said Bethany. "My husband and I saw this as a new chapter in our lives. My husband is also Irish and we wanted an Irish name. Keeping with the Irish tradition, we really liked the name Rowan." Bethany returned to school shortly after the birth of her daughter and credits her mother and tremendous classmates for all of their help. "I have friends who are physicians and they have told me that if they had a child during medical school, they would not have received the help and compassion that I have received from my classmates."

Bethany is balancing new motherhood and her 1st year of medical school well and looks forward to her years ahead at CMSRU.

CMSRU's MEDacademy
to Launch Next Monday, June 29th

Medical School can be a dream or goal for many and for 30 highly motivated and academically gifted high school students from southern New Jersey, MEDacademy will be their first step on the path of becoming a doctor.
This summer, junior and senior high school students, who have a solid interest in a career in medicine, will experience what it is like to be a medical student during MEDacademy, the four-week summer day program (June 29th- July 24th) located on the campus of CMSRU.

Faculty, medical students, physicians, and staff from CMSRU and Cooper University Hospital will present lectures, hands-on demonstrations, interactive clinical experiences and clinical simulations that will introduce students to medical school and provide them with knowledge and experience to explore career possibilities available in the field of medicine. Students will tour Cooper University Hospital, take field trips, and present at a Poster Symposium prior to graduating in the CMSRU auditorium on Friday, July 24th.

          Arden Theatre Event a
             Wonderful Success

O
n March 12th, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and The Arden Theatre of Philadelphia were proud to present the world premiere of the thought-provoking play Under the Skin, by Michael Hollinger. This Sold-Out event, hosted by Drs. Saifuddin and Robin Mama, was an absolute hit! Many CMSRU medical students, faculty, staff, family, and friends enjoyed both a reception prior to the show as well as the entertaining play about a man named Lou who was in desperate need for a new kidney.

We would like to especially thank Drs. Saifuddin and Robin Mama for not only hosting this event, but also generously matching each ticket sale with a gift to CMSRU and the Arden. Thank you!

Cooper Doctors, Med Students Explore Medical Ethics Then and Now
On Thursday, April 23, 2015, nearly 200 students, faculty, and staff attended the 3rd Annual Berkowitz Lecture where the history and evolution of biomedical ethics was reviewed via cases collected from the personal jounrals of Dr. Barron Lerner's late father dating from the 1960s through the 1980s.

When Barron H. Lerner, MD., PhD, was a child, he remembers his physician father keeping meticulous notes on his sick patients - even during family vacations.

"My father, like most of his colleagues at the time, knew his patients well and understood their values and their beliefs about medicine," explains Lerner, an international leader in the history of medical ethics." This was during an era when doctors assumed responsibility for making important life and death decisions on their patients' behalf - 'playing God' -- sometimes without their patients' knowledge."

Much has changed in medicine. Being an ethical doctor today, says Lerner, means empowering patients to make their own decisions. But this evolved philosophy comes with its own set of very challenging ethical issues for physicians. Lerner explored some of these issues during his keynote address at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.

The Berkowitz Lecture series is made possible by a generous gift from The Berkowitz Family Foundation sponsoring annual educational programs for physicians and medical students on a variety of medical ethics topics and featuring world-renowned experts in the field.

New 4th Floor Academic, Office, and Wellness Space Now Complete

On April 16th, CMSRU opened the west side of the 4th floor of the medical education building. This new space includes a 1,512 square foot multipurpose "wet" lab (MPL) which seats 120 and includes state-of-the-art AV equipment; two new Active Learning Rooms; office space for Student Affairs and Admissions and Information Technology staff, including a recording room for lecture recordings; and wellness spaces for use by students, faculty and staff.   "When we built the Medical Education Building, we purposely left unfinished space on one whole side of the 4th floor so we could build it out based on future needs," explained Dean Katz. "I'm really excited about the MPL, which will give our faculty state-of-the art space for hands-on labs and lectures. The fitness studio and meditation rooms are important, too, as we continue to establish a culture of wellness at CMSRU."

The 1,690 square foot Wellness studio is used for instructor-led and/or video recorded fitness sessions. Some small equipment is available including  fitness balls, yoga mats, free weights (up to 10 lbs.), weighted bars, jump ropes, resistance bands, medicine balls, and a punching bag. The Yoga/Meditation Room is for small yoga or fitness classes (4-8 capacity) or for group meditation or prayer. The Private Meditation Room is intended for brief (15-20 minute) individual meditation/relaxation time. It also serves as a quiet retreat for prayer or nursing.

Annual Cup Challengers Remain Undefeated

It is the tradition of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University that each year, the medical students are sorted into 1 of 4 Advisory Colleges: Rush, Cushing, Osler, and Blackwell. Throughout the year, the students compete for points in various challenges, such as 'Penny Wars' and a canned food drive. Those points are added together throughout the year. Finally, the main "Cup Challenge" takes place with various events, with winners receiving additional points per event.

This year, the 2015 CMSRU Cup Challenge took place at the new Kroc Center located on Harrison Avenue in Camden. The day included capture the flag, volleyball, cupcake wars, Wii Sports, tug-of-war and much, much more. Despite the humidity and heat, students' enthusiasm and pride were evident! The score was close all day, with first place bouncing between Rush and Osler. However, with a victory in the final event, tug-of-war, Osler was named CMSRU's 2015 Cup Challenge champions for the third year in a row. The final tally was Osler -137, Rush-133, Cushing-126 and Blackwell-124.  This year's event was noted by some as the best Cup Challenge event yet, and one that will be hard to top for years to come.

We would like to thank the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions and the Cup Challenge student representatives for all of their hard work and dedication to making this a tremendous success!
