A Global Perspective |
|
OmniGlobe Shows Students the World
Lakehill received an out-of-this-world delivery on October 26. An OmniGlobe was installed in
Dr. Martina Kroll's classroom in the Upper School science wing. Kids and adults love to engage with this mesmerizing spherical display.
Kroll has especially made use of this wonder in her geology class, utilizing its features to showcase how tectonic plates play a role in the formation of earthquakes and volcanoes. The OmniGlobe offers a new perspective for the students. "The 3-D aspect allows the students to really engage in what they are learning," says Kroll. "They gain a better understanding of global aspects such as ocean currents, weather patterns, and even the light cycle.
"
Kroll's classes are not the only ones getting to use this exciting new technology. Students of all ages are getting a chance to interact with the attraction. "This has been a fascinating addition to our studies," said Middle School geography teacher
Patty Pippen. "We have looked at weather patterns and observed how pollution affects the entire globe. Perhaps the most interesting was following the course of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean--starting with the earthquake to the ripples of waves across the globe. You just can't see that on a map; but on a 3-D globe, you can see it all."
John Trout spent time with fourth graders exploring the content of the 36-inch, 3-D sphere. The map of human suffering sparked much conversation. "I learned how lucky we really are," explained fourth grader
Zoe Crist. "Even the worst-off in our country have it so much better than so many others in the world."
Olivia Johnston agreed. "When you compare the entire world all at once, you really see the differences in what we have."
The OmniGlobe contains approximately 200 animations and models that demonstrate certain aspects of tens of thousands of years of environmental history, including the cycle of Pangea forming present day earth.
The OmniGlobe is on loan from Earth Day Texas through November 13. Lakehill has partnered with Earth Day Texas for the past four years and will exhibit at this year's event on April 22-24.

Halloween Carnival is Frightfully Fun
Lower School ghouls and goblins showed off their costumes on October 30 during Lakehill's annual Halloween parade. Third grade student
Jack Curtis led the procession down the main hallway and through the building, before continuing to the gym for the Carnival. The coveted position of Parade Leader was sold at last year's PFC Benefit Auction. Parents, students, and faculty members lined the hallways to cheer on the children.
Following the parade, the Parent Faculty Club (PFC) hosted the Halloween Carnival, complete with games, a cookie walk, craft table, face painting, photo booth, and fortune teller.
"We had wonderful volunteers and great participation," said PFC President Barb Witherite. "I especially want to recognize Lydia Perry and Lacie Kuhn, who did such a great job organizing the Carnival. Everyone had a great time."

Snack Stand Provides Funds for UNICEF
Lakehill students are always finding new and creative ways to help their peers across the world, and never is it more apparent than in October when students support Trick or Treat for UNICEF.
Second grader Mason Pedroza recently engineered an impromptu snack stand, raising $65 to help provide food, water, and vaccinations for children around the world.
UNICEF boxes are due now! Students should write their nameand grade on the box and turn it in to their classroom teacher. Thanks to everyone who supported UNICEF this year!

National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors!
This week's senior: Kason Burt
Kason Burt has attended Lakehill since Kindergarten. He will never forget playing football for Lakehill which he has done since the seventh grade. He loves the sport, and is very passionate about it. This year he was elected as a team captain, and is very proud of that accomplishment. Kason also plays basketball and competes in the shot-put and discus events for track and field. In his free time, Kason likes to go hunting and fishing with his brothers and dad along with hanging out with his friends. Kason finds a lot of inspiration in his mom, Kindergarten teacher Mylana Burt, who is his hero.
When he graduates, Kason plans to attend Tarleton State University to pursue a major in wildlife and range management. After college, Kason dreams of owning his own ranch. Out of all the things he will miss about leaving Lakehill, he's going to miss his friends, who he has grown close to over the years, the most.

Varsity Volleyball Wraps Up Impressive Season
After finishing district play undefeated for the second year in a row, the Varsity Volleyball team played host to Austin Veritas on Thursday, October 29. The team won in straight sets 25-16; 25-14; 25-8 in the last home game of the season.
Kelly Carlson led all hitters with 12 kills on the night and also chipped in nine digs and four blocks. The win notched the fourth Bi-district Championship for the team in the past five years.
On November 3, the team traveled to Italy, Texas to take on a hard-hitting Waco Live Oak team. The girls battled until the end, but were defeated 14-25; 14-25; 18-25 ending another outstanding volleyball season. The team finished 29-4 overall on the year.
"One game doesn't define the season we've had," said Coach
Jhoana Cayme-Mosley. "This has been an amazing group of girls to work with and the loss to Live Oak doesn't take away from how hard they've worked for the past three months. Win, lose or draw, I think that we have the greatest fan base out there. We had twice the number of Live Oak fans Tuesday night and I know how much the girls have appreciated all of the support throughout the season. Thank you, Warrior Fans!"
Varsity Football: State Playoffs for Third Straight Year
The Warriors traveled to central Texas for a first-place showdown with the Waco Live Oak Falcons. Both teams had secured berths in the TAPPS State Playoffs, with the winner of this game clinching a share of the District Championship. Live Oak entered the game as the state's top-ranked team.
The Warriors moved the ball well offensively, but several drives were stalled by interceptions and turnovers on downs. The Falcons capitalized each time with their precision passing game and led 24-0 after the first quarter.
Lakehill got on the board with a long touchdown run by
Gerard Franklin, but Live Oak countered with a score seconds before halftime to make it 46-6. The Falcons scored again in the third quarter and ended the game with a 52-6 victory.
Lakehill is now 6-3 and will conclude the regular season on Friday by hosting local rival Tyler Street Christian. The winner will be District Runner-Up. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Warrior Athletic Complex.
A special ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the Currey family will be held in front of the grill area at 6:45 p.m. Lakehill will then honor its senior football players and cheerleaders during Senior Night prior to the game at 6:50 p.m.
Middle School Football Finishes Season Undefeated
The undefeated Middle School Warriors took on Watauga Harvest Christian on October 29 in their final game of the season. The Warriors jumped out to a 19-0 lead half way through the the second quarter. Harvest Christian tried every move they could to get back into game, but the Warriors would not let up.
Cole Johnson had one rushing touchdown, while
Gaige Cerda had two rushing touchdowns.
Ryan Henry saved his best game for last, leading the Warriors with four rushing touchdowns.
"The boys have played outstanding football this entire season," said Coach
Jared Franklin. "Even in the face of adversity they were able to step up when needed.
And that has been the attitude in every game this season. That is why they were able to EARN a 7-0 record this season."

First graders
explored the mechanics of how birds fly. They learned about bird wings and how their special shape creates lift that leads to flight. They also made and observed the effect of wind on wings.
Kindergarten students are learning about animals building homes. They are being assisted in this through an i-Pad application. They will also be observing real animal homes like bird nests and make edible bird nests out of marshmallows, shredded wheat, and jelly beans.
