A MONTH of gratitude!
Nov 8 ~ Breathing Gratitude: How Embodying A Thankful Attitude Changes EVERYTHING!
This is the second Sunday of our month-long clothing donation effort. Each week you are invited to donate clothing that will be distributed to those in need at the end of the month. You are encouraged to start with things that are easy to part with and work towards giving up things you enjoy but could do without because someone is in greater need. The items should be clean and not in need of major repair. Socks, shoes, outerwear and other clothing are all welcome.

Sunday Seminar
This Sunday, November 8th
, Linda Weltner will talk on the healing effects of placebos! Shamans and other healers have used placebos from earliest recorded history, but what does modern science say about the place of harmless pills, medicine or procedures prescribed for the psychological benefits they confer?
Sunday Seminar meets in the Nichols Library (rear of the building), is open to all and nursery care is available. We gather at 8:45 am, begin at 9 am and are done in time to attend Sunday Service at 10:30 am.

A Message from the Treasurer
Pledge Reminder
Happy November! By the end of November we will already be half way through the church year! We wanted to remind everyone that at this juncture of the year it's helpful for everyone to have remitted at least one-half of their pledge balance.
The winter months sees an increase in all our operating expenses and pledge income is very important to the continued operation of this, our spiritual home. We thank you for your continued support of UUCM!

Grounds Clean Up Day
This Weekend! Nov. 7, 9am - 12pm
We going to have a
Grounds Clean Up Day on
Nov. 7, from 9-12, more or less. Your choice of chores will include: some work on the gutters (ladders to be provided), cutting away the bushes from the perimeter of the building so the new paint has a chance to breathe, cutting and gathering the brush against the back wall, tree trimming, leaf raking, and setting up for the concert which is scheduled that evening (details to follow). Other chores will be added. Bring gloves, wear work clothes, and bring tools and rakes though we have some. We have a nice looking building; lets keep it that way!!!!!!!!!
It is possible Nov. 14 will be added as part 2 if the weather does not cooperate or if the list becomes too long or if we just want to keep working!

Stetson features Nedret Andre's SEAGRASS
in November exhibit
Nedret Andre, an award winning Boston based artist who is well known on the North Shore, will unveil a 50-piece project of new work at Stetson Gallery throughout the month of November. The exhibit, "Imagine Seagrass 2015: 50 Ways to Say Seagrass", will be celebrated at an opening reception on Sunday, Nov. 8, 12-2 p.m.
Nedret Andre's seagrass project began several years ago as an outgrowth of her passion for all aspects of the environment and nature. "My fascination with seagrass habitats began last year when I stumbled on a book by Fred Short called Seagrass. I discovered that seventy percent of marine life depend on seagrass, that it is vital to the survival of endangered marine life. The interconnectedness of a vast number of species sheltered, fed and protected by seagrass habitats is an inspiration for my abstract landscapes. My work suggest clues to seagrass habitats. Color, mark making and patterns play an important roles in my paintings. I use saturated and soft colors to evoke sensations of something familiar, of home, nature, and water. I intend to bring viewers' attention to the importance of sea grass globally in the survival of endangered marine sea life.

Thanksgiving Arrangement Workshop
Sheila Donovan and Holly Jaynes are holding a Thanksgiving Arrangement workshop on Thursday, November 19 from 7-9 pm.
Instruction, expert coaching and materials will be provided AND you'll get to take your arrangement home for your own table or to use as a gift.
There is a $10 registration fee to cover materials.

Many thanks to the many people who have helped support
Beth Presson with the recent & sudden loss of her son,
Jake Moore. Appreciation also goes out to those who helped with the service. In particular, Cindy Moore, Hazel Grenham, Bill Smalley, Paul Travis, Sheila Cran-Barry and Hugh Stewart. Visits to Beth will continue to be helpful in the coming weeks and months. Also, Beth's cousin, Deb Elkin, has set up a GoFundMe page in Memory of Jake to help Beth with funeral expenses.

1716-2016
The Celebration of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead's Three Hundredth Anniversary begins its fall program with a
walking tour of the old town. Teaming with Old North Church, who is celebrating the 300th anniversary of Rev. Barnard's installation, the tours will include commentary about how our congregation separated from Old North and about 1700 Marblehead. Historian Judy Anderson will conduct the tours.

Red Bow Fair News
Red Bow Fair December 5th (9am - 3 pm)
Gift Baskets, Holiday Greens, Gifts, Sweets & Treats, White Elephant Sale, Children's Activities including face painting, and a raffle for a handmade doll house, quilt and 25 lbs of lobster. Lunch will be between 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

So many thanks to the many UUCM members and friends who have taken stars from the Gifting Tree and brought in their goodies for us to assemble! It's wonderful to see how things fall into place for us to start designing and filling! We've done one major shopping trip so far that added up to $250, so those cash/check donations are so appreciated as well.
As many of you know, a Church Friend, Rick Welch, who is a wine distributor, donates sample bottles to us each year. Amazing! This year, we will have a mix of high end reds and whites that retail between $25-$50 per bottle! Those of you who are regular Gift Basket Shoppers know how we price our baskets, so you know what incredible bargains you are getting for such exceptional wines especially when accompanied by lovely glasses, napkins, and delicious foods. Spread the word!
If you've taken a star but haven't brought in your donation, or if you haven't donated yet, please do! We are already in assembly mode!

Such Fun!
Thank you to everyone who participated, and to Delia, Ronnie, Beth Konaires & Mary Gardner in particular for their help in setting up, cleaning up and transporting the international students from Salem State AND to the students for hauling all the pumpkins in from Rev. Wendy's car. Special thanks to Gini von Courter for going over to get Jake Moore's pumpkin and to Ani Chickering for suggesting it should be placed right in the middle of our Halloween night line-up. Once again, a wonderful time was had by all!

me&thee news!
Friday, November 6, 8:00 p.m. Anaïs Mitchell
One of the reigning queens of indie folk music, Anaïs Mitchell, graces the stage of the me&thee with her breathtaking mix of vocals and brilliant and complex storytelling. Praised by the UK's Independent as "The most engaging and in some ways, most original artist currently working in the field of new American 'folk' music," this young Vermont-based singer-songwriter has built an impressive discography to date, including a folk-rock opera, Hadestown.
We've had some pretty famous people at the coffeehouse before, but now we can say we have a star of stage and screen: Tony Award winning actor (Spring Awakening) John Gallagher Jr. You may know him as Jim Harper in HBO's The Newsroom and as Christopher Kitteridge in the stunning Olive Kitteridge mini-series. John brings his own original repertoire as the show opener.

Coming Soon ~
Our exploration of Gratitude continues throughout November. In December we'll step into Radical Hospitality and also take time to treat our bodies, minds and spirits to meditation.
Please join us for a special service on Tuesday, November 24th at 7 pm for an interfaith Thanksgiving Service. Each year the Marblehead clergy gather and lead this service. This year we are hosting. A collection is taken at this service to benefit the Marblehead Food Pantry and you are invited to bring in goodies to share for the reception that follows. This is our chance to share our interfaith relationships with gratitude by being gracious and welcoming hosts.
Sunday Seminar: On November 15, Susan Morrison will lead a conversation about the book Being Mortal and aging gracefully.

Giving It Up For Gratitude
This Sunday kicked off a month-long exploration of gratitude AND a chance to practice it by bringing in clothing donations. We'll be collecting them in the chancel throughout the month and then distributing them to people in need at the end of the month. It's a terrific way to simplify AND share. Both are worthy spiritual practices.
October 25th Message: A Blast from the Past!
Peter Kent has stumbled upon an old sermon by former minister, The Rev. Robert L. Hill. it begins "I have had some surprises in my life, but I guess I've never been much more surprised than I was the day the Women's Liberation Movement threw me out of my own church." Peter shared this piece of not-too-long ago history Sunday October 25th. Rev. Hill was delighted to hear his sermon was made live once more and even more delighted to learn how vibrant UUCM continues to be 50 years later!
