Ribbon Workshop To Be Held at NAMI-NYS Education Conference

NAMI Westchester and NAMI Mid-Hudson have had a great deal of success with their individual Ribbon Campaigns during May is Mental Health Month.  We are excited to have Sheryl Brauman of NAMI Westchester and  Tina Lee of NAMI Mid-Hudson leading a workshop at this year's Education Conference on the ribbon campaigns.  Ribbons will be available at the conference if affiliates are interested in holding the ribbon campaign in their area.

NAMI Cayuga County Holds C.I.T.

Representatives from local, county and state law enforcement agencies completed Crisis Intervention Training this week in hopes of more effectively responding to individuals in crisis. The five day 40-hour training, taught by Dr. Don Kamin, helps law enforcement officers learn how to safely handle situations involving individuals with psychiatric disabilities. Completing the training were:
  • 7 Auburn Police Department police officers
  • 1 Cayuga County 911 official
  • 1Cayuga County Probation Supervisor
  • 4 New York State troopers
In Our Own Voice facilitators Marty Centers and Chris Wasilenko presented the program to the officers.  NAMI Cayuga County members Julie and Tom DiBagio, Lorelee Lardear, Bart and Terri Wasilenko presented the family's perspective to the officers. Click here to read more.

Kenneth Cole Billboard Sends Mixed Message

NAMI Rockland member Diana Siegel recently spied the Kenneth Cole billboard on the Westside Highway depicting an offensive message to those living with mental illness.  Although Kenneth Cole attempted to clarify via Twitter that the message was a call for gun control and not meant to stigmatize mental illness, those of us advocating for the eradication of the stigma of mental illness, including NAMI Rockland, are reaching out to Kenneth Cole to voice their disappointment.  You can read NAMI Rockland's response here.  The American Psychiatric Association has commented on the billboard as well, click here to see more and click here to read a blog by the APA President.
